Bastar state was a princely state in India during the British Raj. It was founded in the early 14th century, supposedly by a brother of the last ruler of the Kakatiya dynasty, Prataparudra II. She was born on 10th February 1910 and married in January 1927 to Prafulla Chandra Bhanjdeo, nephew of Mayur Bhanj Maharaj. There is a mention of the queen in a magazine called 'The Indian Woman Hood'. Maharani Prafulla Kumari Devi was the first and only woman ruler not only of Bastar but of the entire Chhattisgarh. Rani Prafulla Kumari Devi (1922-1936), who ruled this region, didn't follow British imposed policies. British decided to hand over part of Bastar, rich in iron ore reserves,to the then Nizam of Hyderabad against a hefty sum. Maharani challenged both Nizam & the British. (RajeshwariAiyer) She ascended to the throne after her father's death & she was merely 12 years old. She was made queen because of people's demand that her father's last rites won't take place untill she is proclaimed the queen of Bastar. She ruled till 1936 when she mysteriously died in London following apendix operation. She was eliminated by British so that bailadila mines can be handed over to Nizam. District hospital of Bastar is still on her name "Maharani Hospital" as she was the one who got the hospital built.
