If you think about it, lore-wise Minecraft is actually a very depressing game - at least in singleplayer survival.
I mean, you spawn in, alone, into an unknown world. You find small village communities, the occasional ruined portal, and then you realise that almost everything from before you has died out. Almost all of the structures are in ruins or abandoned - abandoned mineshafts, strongholds, ruined portals...even the Nether has been warped and ruined, the bastions in remnants and the ancient buildings crumbled, all the ores already taken eons before, all that remains is ancient debris. Even the end cities are no longer populated, only infested by the parasitic shulkers. The obsidian pillars in the end, the villages and cities, implies intelligent life, but it's all gone. Around the world you can find zombified villagers, and even fossils. Creatures that died long before you, in some unknown event. What happened to everything? Where did everyone go?
It's not meant to be that deep, I know. it's more meant to be a broken world that you can recreate with your own hands, and that's beautiful. But if I stop mining for ancient debris and diamonds and just stop and I really think about it, sometimes minecraft can be really unsettling.
