“Thank you for dinner, by the way.” Ava leans her head against his shoulder, and his heart gives a great, leaping thump.
“Of course,” he says. “I mean, it was only a cheeseburger. Not exactly fine dining.”
“And fries,” Ava reminds him. “And a milkshake. And asking me to Prom in the first place.”
“Well yeah,” Archer says, trying very hard not to let his voice sound as desperately in love with the girl he’s known since fourth grade as it is. “You’re my best friend.”
Ava smiles up at him, her sparkly smoky eye catching in the lights from other cars in the joint’s parking lot. “Doesn’t mean you had to ask me,” she says, surprisingly soft. “Doesn’t mean I had to say yes.”
“But you did,” he says, quietly.
“Yeah.” She smooths one red curl away from her face and blinks up at him.
Archer takes a deep breath. Now or never, he thinks, and leans in.
“What in the - !” Ava shrieks and Archer pulls back immediately just as something breezes through his hair like a ruffling pair of affectionate fingers.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t - I thought - ” he stammers, blushing furiously.
“No, no,” Ava hurries to say. “It’s just, something like just flew into your head! Like a - right there! That!”
She points with her free hand and Archer turns to see two very small fluttering shapes darting around each other several feet above their heads. They seem to be chirping at each other, like they’re in some sort of conversation, high pitched and animated.
“Is that a bird?” Ava asks.
“A bat,” Archer growls. “Or a pair of bats, rather.”
“Oh,” Ava laughs. “I though they were supposed to have good night vision.”
“They do,” Archer sighs.
“It’s not a big deal,” Ava says brightly, giving him a peck on the cheek and getting into her side of the car. “Come on!”
His cheek burning from the contact of her lips, Archer grins and climbs into the passenger seat.
“Oh, there they are again!” Ava laughs, glancing up through the moonroof as the bats flit overhead. “They’re cute!”
“Yeah,” Archer agrees. He fishes out his phone, sends a text, then, boldly, reaches out and twines his fingers with Ava’s as he puts the car in reverse.
[Archer: LIL, can you please remind mom and dad that TEXTING TO CHECK ON YOUR CHILDREN IS A THING???]
