i was actually just writing a post with a steph and lonnie parallel before i realized it was too unfocused and i stashed it in a draft. but tldr yes. as an unabashed timlonnie and timsteph enjoyer it only makes sense to be a stephlonnie and complete the triangle
mind you i’m a preboot guy so i know they’ve interacted more in rebirth (disparaging, they nerf lonnie and then make him really slimy) but this is my gut going with their preboot characterizations. i think that steph deserves boyfriends she can push around which she does with tim but sometimes tim gets too neurotic for it but lonnie is #enlightened and starts quoting goldman and guérin and brown about anarchist sexgender theory at her while shes like shut the fuck up about the ethics of making out while we’re making out. lonnie’s generally pretty condescending which pisses steph off but i do think on principle lonnie would put more value in steph’s ability to handle herself and her autonomy and willpower than… anyone else in capes so i think she would really appreciate that. i think he would believe in her in a way she doesn’t get a lot
lonnie being a rogue means he doesn’t get the same insight into what’s good or bad for him; he doesn’t get a protagonist’s interiority, even in his own solo. so thinking about him with the same grace i’d give to a bat, i think he suffers from a very adolescent urge to cut himself from everyone and rest on the strength of his own genius (which creates conflict with his own ideology). moreso than richboy tim who spent most of his life in boarding school, steph is a gothamite to her core and one with a lot of ideological disagreement with him, so it’s good for him to not only relate to but also care for someone so frank and unpretentious and real. like yes she is a kickass vigilante hero but stephanie brown is also in many ways a deeply normal young woman and i think he lost a lot of that social connection when he became anarky. he needs someone who can drag him out of his head and bring his ass to batburger.
