Sirius pulled at the jumper’s sleeve.
“Come on, just let me have it!” He growled from between clenched teeth.
“No, it’s mine!” Remus snarled back.
“Just share it, Remus!”
“No!”
“You have a drawer full!”
“No, I don’t! You’ve stolen them all!” Sirius stopped tugging so hard. He was sure he hadn’t taken all of them. He was careful to return them when they didn’t smell like Remus any more.
“I don’t have any; I gave them all back.”
“Then where are they?” James and Peter came into the dorm room, laughing loudly, completely oblivious to the struggle going on in front of them. Both of them were wearing Remus’s jumpers. “Oi!” Remus shouted accusingly. “Those are mine!” James and Peter shuffled guiltily.
“Sorry, Remus,” James apologised, raising his hands placatingly. “It’s just Sirius is always wearing them, and they looked so damn comfy.”
“Where are the rest?” James and Peter began shuffling guiltily again.
“Well, the thing is, Lily saw us wearing them and commented that she’d always wanted to try one on, so I borrowed one for her.”
“That doesn’t account for the others. Where are they all?” James winced before he continued.
“Well, after Lily put hers on, Mary and Marlene wanted one, so we got two more for them.”
“And the rest?”
“Regulus, Barty, Evan, Pandora, and Dorcas have them!” Peter squeaked from behind James. Remus looked as though he were about to explode. Sirius, unwisely, took the opportunity of Remus’s distraction to yank the jumper out of his hands and bolt for the door.
The sight at the bottom of the spiral staircase as he burst into the common room made him stop in his tracks. The sofas and chairs nearest to him were full of his friends, all wearing Remus’s jumpers.
He was so stunned he forgot he was being chased by Remus and failed to react when Remus tackled him to the floor and took his jumper back. He stood above Sirius triumphantly, his face falling when he saw what Sirius had been staring at.
Remus glared at their gathered friends and held his hand out to them. One by one, they removed the stolen jumpers and handed them over and headed back upstairs to lock them away from pilfering hands.
“Does this mean I can have one now?” Sirius shouted after him and received a bat-bogey hex to the face for his troubles. James eventually helped him banish the snotty bat, but it took far longer than it should have because James couldn’t catch his breath long enough between bouts of laughter to end the spell.
Sirius glared at Remus when he came back downstairs and sulked while the others began a heated debate over which team they thought was going to win the Quidditch World Cup that year, and he plotted how to get to Remus’s jumpers, because he’d be damned if he wasn’t getting one of those soft woolly jumpers.
