BatalJ Review

A studio formed by four DICE veterans offers an interesting way to keep matches quick while maintaining deep strategy.

So the story goes one of the original founders of Digital Illusions, Markus Nyström, was part of a bunch of DICE veterans setting up Fall Damage Studio in Stockholm last year, with financial backing from the Goodbye Kansas group. Their first game is called BatalJ(a variation on the Swedish word For Battle)

In Batalj, players can build their own roster based on one of the three available factions, Rusters(slow no-nonsense tanks), Re-linked  (hit and run tactics) and Splicers(cloak and dagger tactics), including their own skill sets and abilities. Next is to choose the hero for his squad of 9 different heroes, and finally choose from 54 soldiers to create complete tactics. The nature of Batalj’s turn-based game mechanics promises to bring a quick game rhythm when players must constantly use their mind and calculation ability until the last turn. Leave a unit idle without moving or using an ability and it won’t spend any action points and move to the front of the next round, reversely if you use a powerful ability with a high cost it will move to the back of the next timeline.  During the planning phase, you always know in what order the actions will play out, so you can plan your tile-targeted or unit-targeted attacks accordingly. Each match is designed to be short (Between 15 – 20 Minutes)

It is also interesting to note that Batalj contains no microtransactions and also no progression beyond unlocking cosmetic options – all the units are available as soon as you’ve purchased the game. It’s purely player versus player, and purely one on one. Not a lot of games do that here in 2019
