summary: per tradition, each of the kids get their own hand-made costume and go out with you on Halloween night and you make sure Damian is not an exception
tags: reader is crafty; home-made costumes; reader and Dami match, coraline mentioned since it's my favourite movie; Damian has a soft spot for reader and he's not ready to admit that
a/n: I'm going to be so honest, I have no clue when Damian started living in the manor (month wise) so let's just go with November for story purposes.
You knew coaxing Damian into going out with you on Halloween night instead of patrolling wouldn't be an easy task. Because of that, you started planning the night months in advance. While the other kids were still in a summer mood, the fall having no place in their minds, you were in full planning mode.
Damian had joined the household last year, right after Halloween, so this holiday will be the first one he celebrated.
You knew you wanted to make the night special, so you made the costumes back in August. One for Damian and one for you. Just like you did with other kids. You made sure the Polaroid camera has film inside and there's a space in Wayne's Halloween photo album.
The first time you asked Damian about his plans for Halloween was at the beginning of the month. He brushed you off, calling the holiday childish.
The second time went pretty much the same. This time, he called you childish, questioning Bruce's sanity in choosing you as his husband.
It was only after Damian overheard Dick and Alfred reminiscing about the latter's first Halloween at the manor that the boy approached you about the holiday.
Damian came into your craft room, the place he found himself enjoying spending time with you over time. As long as you didn't speak and let him paint in peace, that is.
"Grayson said you make costumes for everyone for their first Halloween in the manor. Is that true?" Damian asked, standing in the doorway.
"Yup!" You turn towards where he's standing. "Have ones for you and me ready too. Wanna see them?"
Damian nodded. You stood up, walking towards your sewing station and taking out two ready costumes.
"Coraline and The Other Mother?" Damian asked, holding the yellow raincoat.
"Yeah! "You said you enjoyed the movie when we watched it together, so I thought it would be a cool idea," you shrugged. "Was thinking about making the doll as well, but you really didn't want to go, so I stopped at the costumes."
"Make the doll; I shall go with you." He handed you the raincoat. "As the heir, I cannot skip on the tradition you and Father seemed to set up."
"And I am not wearing a wig," Damian said over his shoulder, walking out of your craft room.
You had the doll ready by the next morning; you went as far as skipping on sleep to work on it. Also, Damian won't have the time to change his mind.
You were excited when the day finally came, buzzing with energy since the early hours of the morning.
You made sure the other kids would not poke fun at Damian that day. Threatening to hide all the candy if they try anything.
Damian was getting ready in his room while you sat in the living room, looking over the Halloween album. You stopped at the last page, which had only the title, lacking a picture.
Damian cleared his throat as he entered the living room. You jumped towards him, your fingers brushing over his costume, checking if it fits correctly.
You moved back, picking up the camera. You called Damian to follow you, ready to start with the trick-or-treating.
"What is this for?" He pointed at the camera in your hands.
"I want to take a picture of your first Halloween in the manor." You raised the camera, smiling at Damian.
"Why?" the kid pressed, the doll in his right hand swinging as he walked.
"It's a tradition! I take a picture of everyone in front of the manor for their first trick-or-treating."
"Alright, we don't have to do that," you sighed, leaving the camera at the entrance. "Let me know if you change your mind."
You tried to not let the lack of a Damian picture bother you too much. You could always paint one if it came to it.
Damian remained vigilant at first, looking around for any threats as you chatted with other parents, complimenting their kids' costumes.
At the first house, Damian mumbled 'trick or treat' as if it was going to kill him if anyone heard him say it. Luckily for you, the older woman brushed it off as him being shy and handed him an extra piece of candy. You dragged Damian away before he could jump the woman for calling him shy.
The next few went pretty much the same, with Damian stiffly asking for candy and you taking him away before anyone can comment on it.
As Damian's bag started to fill up, the more relaxed the boy looked. You even caught him smiling as he returned to you with some of his favourite candy bars.
You and Damian stayed out until the streets cleared out of parents and their kids. Damian managed to fill up two bags, declaring to share some with you and only you. You were the one who made the costumes; you deserve them too. Not like the rest of them.'
Walking up the manor's driveway, you realised how badly your feet were hurting. You knew a foot massage would be the first thing you ask for the moment you see your husband. That's the least he could do after you made sure Damian didn't attack anyone for calling him shy.
Damian paused on the steps of the manor, turning back to stare at you.
"Can you take my picture too? For the album."
