Devin Townsend Ziltoid The Omniscient 2007 Track Of Choice: Solar Winds After Strapping Young Lad dissolved Dev retreated and for a little while I was worried I wouldn't hear anything from him for a long time. After all that's what he kept saying he was going to do afterwards. But then this oddity appeared. Dev made a mental looking puppet using his own dreadlocks (he was pretty much bald anyway) and put this metal musical out. Telling the story of Ziltoid The Omniscient, who comes to our galaxy looking for our finest coffee, and creating all the music himself (even using the Mushuggah drummers drum kit from hell software) this album is all Dev. It's beautiful in some parts and utterly brutal in others. In many ways it sets the stall out for what became the Devin Townsend Project albums that followed a couple of years later. I'm so pleased I've got this. This is taken from the newly arrived Eras box set and it's on limited edition Lilac Vinyl! Portishead Dummy 22nd August 1994 Track Of Choice: Roads 25 years old today. Which is incredible. Born out of the Bristol scene that saw Massive Attack and Tricky bloom as artists Portishead had something a little different than MA. Yes there are big Hip Hop inspired beats but it's classic instruments that accompany those beats that slant this album into an other realm. It's 1950's torch songs played through a DJ's turntable. It's has that old school jazz sound with added urban grit. Easily one of my favourites. #bathtimerecord Deftones White Pony 2000 My birthday gift from my mum and dad. Which is cool. Deftones transcended what was known as Nu Metal with this their third album. The sonics of this album are incredible. The textures around the brutal riffs and elegant guitar lines, the complex but catchy drums and the mysterious lyrics and vocals. One of @emmjemm07 birthday presents this year was her own #record Happy birthday sweetheart So for her on her birthday today's #bathtimerecord is dedicated to Emily x #bathtimerecord Pvris All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell 2017 One of many bands that have taken the blueprint laid down by Paramore and run away with it. This is Pvris (Paris in case you are wondering how to say that) second album. They are way more electro punk though with female vocals and danceable beats as well massive choruses. They have been a favourite of Emily's for a while now. She even has a poster of them on her bedroom door. I approve. They are just as much pop as they are rock. In some ways Pop Punk but that doesn't cover what these guys do. They are, in a weird way, Post Pop Punk. Is that even a thing? They share similarities with the new wave of the early 80s as they combine dance and pop with rock, punk and alternative vibes. Madvillain Madvillainy 2004 Track Of Choice: Raid feat M.E.D. aka Medaphoar Welcome to 2021. New year, lots of new records to play from Christmas but yesterday was also the day that the death of MF Doom was announced. And there was no way I was letting that go by without saying something. And playing something. I can't profess to be a huge fan of Doom. I've only been listening to his music on and off for a few years now but his talent was without question. As you dig into the history of hip hop you start to hear this phrase "The MCs favourite MC" and that's what MF Doom was. One of the greatest MCs ever. This album is a collaboration between Madlib on beats and Doom on vocals. And it's wild and weird and chopped together. Soul samples, looped beats and bass, odd sound bites and that smooth but worn and wise voice. It's rightly regarded as one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time. So this one for MF DOOM. Bath Time Records Albums Of 2020. Number One. My Album Of The Year. Paradise Lost — Obsidian // As a long time fan I've stopped expecting anything less than greatness from these Yorkshire legends. At this point in their 30 plus year career they could drop decent but average albums and everyone would be fine with that. Instead, the band drop possibly their best album. This is expansive Gothic Metal taking in every facet of their sound to date. Goth, Doom, Doom Death and even those so called "Depeche Mode" elements. Strings, acoustics and pianos accent the heavy as lead riffs and beautifully miserable dripping leads. The drums are expressive and the vocals range from the guttural to the sublime. 16 albums in Paradise Lost have no right to release an album this damn good. It's by far one of the bands best albums. And it's album of the year for me.
