Silver and Blue, Like Him
A short drabble for @halfusek, her Joey (Magenta) being a wonderful subject to write for with atmosphere
The chill of night ran through him like the wind blew through a straw. If “silver” was tangible in all but color, this would be it; cold, smooth, glistening. Diamonds and spears and whistles and creaks. These were the sorts of words that came to his mind as he sat in the moonbeams and looked at his hands.
The crickets were singing in the tall grass on the edges of the parking lot, grateful for their land being untouched. Joey knew, of course, that they should be grateful to not be lost in his world instead.
He tilted his nose up, eyes tired but wide as the blue of the stars caught in his green. The expression upon him was…unreadable. Either thoughtful or entirely thoughtless, reverent or ignorant. A moment where he was simply existing.
He didn’t get many of these anymore.
In and out…in and out…
His fingers could almost feel their knuckles click. Joey had been clenching them all day. With a blink, he looked back down and saw the way the shadow of his hair ran over his hands, the way the cold felt like something invisible was leaving them. The collar of his coat ruffled against the side of his jaw, and he felt a stab in his heart he would soon deny at the sight of the ink underneath his fingernails.
A flash of his face- the other creator’s.
“Your hands are so messy!” Joey laughed with a small shove as he passed behind his desk.
The man in blue laughed. “Ink under the nails means something came to life that day-”
Joey’s fist flew into the nearest object, and he saw one of the crickets hop for cover as the trash can hit the ground. The tinny clang sent soundwaves through his soul blow after blow, his heightened breath seeming to hurt him too. He stood there, in shock of his own violence about someone he held so dear, he saw the bug on the ground do the same as Henry before.
The tiny thing that chirped just for his delight scurried under a crack in the building’s siding, hidden amid Joey’s labyrinth somewhere it could never be found again.
He looked at his hands, and they were trembling through the filters of midnight’s silver and blue.
And he saw a bit of red come through purple through a cut, blood and ink upon his hands as remains of his business- old papers and memories he came out to throw away- scattered on the parking lot like the nothing they were.
