“  𝒀𝒐𝒖  𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕  𝒈𝒆𝒕  𝒊𝒕,  𝒅𝒐  𝒚𝒐𝒖?  ”   It’s  rhetorical  and  sounds  more  like  a  plea  than  a  question  seeking  an  answer.   Hands  hold  his  temples  while  head  shakes.   “  It’s  not  that  easy  --  I  can’t  just  leave.  ”   Fingers  curl  to  mold  to  the  shape  of  his  scalp,  hairs  being  tugged  furiously  as  Max  all  but  screams.   It’s  a  stress  he  never  wanted  to  bear.   A  stress  he’s  done  a  pretty  good  job  at  avoiding  so  far  ;  the  choice  between  good  and  evil.   “  When  you’re  in  this  --  this  shit  storm  of  crime,  you  can’t  just  walk  away.  ”   Tongue  peaks  out  to  wet  dried  lips  before  teeth  gnaw  at  his  bottom  one.   “  You  say  it  like  I  have  a  choice,  but  I  don’t.   There’s  no  free  will  when  you  live  this  kind  of  life.  ”   Silence  suddenly  takes  hold  of  the  moment.   Max  is  almost  certain  he  can  still  hear  his  voice  echoing  through  the  air.   This  time  he’s  speaking  in  a  softer  tone,  “  Look,  you’re  the  good  guys  --  I  know  that.   But  there’s  no  way  out  for  me  . . .   ”   Even  if  there  is,  he’s  having  a  hard  time  identifying  it.   “  I’m  sorry,  but  I  can’t. ”

                                         the    words    are    spoken    quietly    ,    a    noticable    𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯  before    the    sentence    parts    from    bloodstained    lips    .    your    heart    𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬    at    the    mere    thought    ,    but    the    sight    of    him    in    𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯    as    a    consequence    of    𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫    actions    hurts    even    worse    .          ❝        don’t    get    me    wrong     ,    jace     .     𝚒    𝚠𝚊𝚗𝚝    𝚝𝚘    𝚋𝚎    𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚑     𝚢𝚊     ,    but    i      .    .    .       it’s    𝐦𝐲    fault    that    you’re    injured    and    what    if    ----     what    if    somethin’    𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦    happens    next     time    ?     what     if     you    get    killed    ?    i    can’t    just    𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝    𝐛𝐲    and    let    that    happen    .    i’d    rather    just    let    ‘em    𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦    𝘮𝘦    instead    .      ❞

“  Yeah,  you  don’t  have  to  keep  reminding  me,  dude.   I  get  it.  ”   Max  fights  off  the  urge  to  scoff  and  instead  opts  out  for  a  shake  of  the  head.   He’s  still  not  sure  he  understands  entirely.   Part  of  him  even  believes  this  might  be  one  extremely  potent  acid  trip.   But  maybe  the  existence  of  demons  isn’t  the  craziest  thing  he’s  heard.   In  fact,  it  might  be  one  of  the  more  tamer  news  he’s  received  all  week  ---  which  isn’t  necessarily  a  good  thing.   

        “  So  Jac---  demon  hunter,  what  exactly  is  it  that  you  need  me  for?  ”
