Rich Quinn shared in chapel today how he and his wife, Karen, adopted 18 children over nearly 20 years. This experience has lead him to understand more profoundly how God has taken we who were orphaned into His family, “God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.” Galatians 4:4,5. When our hearts do not tremble because of the power of Jesus, it may be that his actions are becoming just another “story” and not a redemptive act that transforms our lives. The afternoon sun lights up Baxter’s tall evergreens and palms, and reminds us of God’s desire to enlighten our hearts with all that is good. “We have never seen anything like this!” ‭‭ 38 years ago with Dianna six months pregnant, we decided to go on a vacation to the Andes mountains. Remember we were young, just 30 years old. It was a straight shot out of Buenos Aires; 680 miles in our 1972 Ford Falcon. The views are awesome; Aconcagua is the tallest mountain in North and South America at 22,841 feet. Thus, the reaction on seeing the peak. The same words were uttered by a crowd who had just seen Jesus heal a paralyzed man in Mark 2. Amazement and awe were often the reactions of those who saw His power at work and heard His life-changing messages. Today God is doing amazing things through His people throughout Latin America. “La Mano” / The Hand of ... of Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal. In 1982 he sculpted in the sands of Punta del Este “La Mano”; two years later we left our home in Buenos Aires and took a vacation to Uruguay. We were impressed by this huge hand extending from the sand. A year later I gave a series of lessons for the Rosario, Argentina Church. In the series I utilized contemporary photos from the region to bridge the non-Christian to the events of the Gospel of Mark. The references to “La Mano” of Jesus appear frequently: “he took her by hand” and healed the mother-in-law of Peter, “He reached out his hand and touched the man” and healed him of his leprosy. Could the sculpture remind us of “La Mano” of Christ which He frequently extended to His fellowman and ultimately extended out to take the nails on the cross. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free...” Galatians‬ ‭5:1‬ ‭ From our front porch in the USA we celebrated independence; in 5 days our dear friends in Argentina will celebrate theirs; and in two months Honduras and other Central American nations will also celebrate. Paul’s words though remind us that eternal independence is only celebrated in Jesus. This goose spotting today might give another meaning to “waging your tongue.” Now we don’t want to be too hard on this mother goose who was nesting on the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. In these anxious moments the waging tongue goose, lots of bees, birds, and beautiful flowers remind us that God made them all and, “why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. A Turtle’s Pace. Our patience is being tried; “alright already let’s get over with this virus;” it all seems to be moving at a turtle’s pace. Nearly 8 years ago I found slowly creeping around Baxter this turtle. It was a time when I was anxious for things to move faster as Baxter’s new president. Now it seems as though it has happened in a flash: 7 graduations, 7 mission teams - where has the time gone. Moises’ 40 years, Jesus’ 30 years, and Paul’s 12 years remind us that good things happen to those who wait on the Lord ... who accept His timing, Psalm 37:9.
