“It was like I had stepped back 45 years when we desperately wanted missionaries to tell us what mission work would be like.” Dianna was today on the other end, telling her stories of going to Argentina, working in a team, and raising a family in a distant land. “It was fun.” These three mothers are looking to a time in the not too distant future when they pray God will use them, their husbands and a single student to start a church in Colombia. They are from Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Colombia. As a 3 year old and now as a 21 year old. Daniel Ramírez was born in Tegucigalpa when his parents were students at Baxter, now he returns to begin his studies here. His parents are members of a mission team of Baxter graduates that have worked with the Great Cities Ministries. What a Blessed Visit! In 2017 Sebastian Girado graduated from Baxter. He then return to his hometown of Cartagena, Colombia, but along the way (at Baxter) he met Abigail, his future wife. They work together as a wonderful team serving, ministering, evangelizing, and preaching for the church in Cartagena. They too find themselves sheltering in the US with hopes of returning to Colombia in January. Please pray for them as they look for support to continue their work there. On June 1, 1975 we took our first international flight, and flew to Europe to work in a summer Harding campaign. This was the Cold War era, and we traveled behind the Iron Curtain to the communist countries of Poland, Yugoslavia, and Hungry. We were then 23 and 22 years old. This past Sunday nearly 45 years later we flew to Honduras to continue our mission work at Baxter. The world has changed in many ways (the Iron Curtain does not exist), but the mission to a lost world is just as challenging. In a memorial service today we honored our Lord who worked mightily in the life of Dan Coker. Dan was a legend, a mentor, and truly a servant leader. He would engaged the intelectual in a Global campaign and then on the way to the airport let our taxi driver know how much God loved his soul. What a blessing he was to have as friend, adviser, and counselor for we who were young missionaries in 1980s. Besides being a brilliant orator, he excelled as a teacher. You didn’t forget his lectures in those 1970s mission seminars at ACU on the Latin American Culture nor his one-day pep talks to campaigners who were getting ready to hit the streets. He companioned the Global Campaigns to nine mega cities in Latin America as well as the annual Pan American lectures. He not only motivated ex-missionaries to return again the field, he did it. No tribute is sufficient; Paul’s personal summation perhaps best captures Dan, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Phil. 1:21. He embodied Jesus’ love for others and especially Latin Americans.
