As snow falls, Amtrak's westbound Bay State rolls through Wellesley, MA, with the usual F40/Amfleet consist. The Bay State was the state-funded "Inland Route" service that ran from Boston to Washington via Springfield and Hartford. This was four-track territory in the heyday of the Boston & Albany. Roger on the Springfield line

With a burp of diesel smoke, Amtrak's ex-NH Roger Williams RDC cab units running as the New Haven-Springfield-Boston Bay State accelerate north after making the station stop at Meriden, CT. This train was a regular mid-70s assignment for these unique Budds.

Bay State at Wellesley Farms

The coming of Amtrak on 5/1/71 ended passenger service west of Worcester on the Boston & Albany line, but a few months later Massachusetts paid for the startup of a new Boston-Springfield-New Haven-New York train called the Bay State. With a former New Haven GP9 in charge, the westbound Bay State sped through Wellesley Farms in April 1972.

New Haven Railroad General Electric EP-5 Motor # 374, is seen while leading the eastbound # 12, The Bay State, bound for Boston at Stamford, Connecticut January 30, 1967. There is still some ice and snow remaining on the right-of-way from the last snowfall. During the winter regardless of the financial condition of the railroad, it is is very hard to keep equipment clean due to the weather conditions. The steam, even though it is leaking a bit at this time is surely needed to heat the passenger cars.
