UCTC Transportation Tour

I was lucky enough to fall into the opportunity to go on the UCTC (University of California Transportation Center) Transportation Tour over the past few days. After seeing a seemingly hurried advertisement to our CRP facebook page, I found myself bay-bound and ready to take on whatever this trip had in store.

We stayed just outside of Richmond in a decent hotel close to a certain shady casino. It was an interesting place to say the least, but a good enough location to call home for the next few days. I was greeted by some weary travels just like myself, and we promptly found our rooms and conked out.

The next morning we all headed on over to the UC Berkeley transportation labs in Oakland. We discovered some surprising facts about the age of self-driving cars, different autonomous options for vehicles, and even the different types of data integration we can expect to see in the coming years. From there, we haphazardly drove to a CalTrans construction yard near the Bay Bridge, and toured the facility while learning about the bridge and its construction. To our surprise, CalTrans took us out on a boat and we were able to inspect the underside of the two bridges. It was an incredible day, and the bay was nothing less than beautiful (and the bridge too!) Unfortunately, we didn't drive over it until a few days later. Our next stop was in Oakland at Kittleston & Associates, where we met up with some Cal Poly grads and discussed the private sector of transportation development and demand. It was interesting to see the things we had learned in theory being used for municipalities and private firms alike. After a quick lunch/dinner at Lukas, we headed home and found ourselves more exhausted than we expected, although we still made an attempt at the Casino nearby (bad idea.)

Today, we travelled to the Berkeley campus to speak with the head of the academic senate, who was also a transportation planner/advisor for transportation activities. She was easily one of the best public speakers I've ever met, and I hope to someday be able to match her fluidity of speech and all around appreciation for the big picture. We unfortunately skipped all the incredible food options in Berkeley due to a bout of lateness on our part for our next arrangement in SF. We visited the SF Municipal Transportation Authority and met up with a few grads and undergrads currently employed at SF MTA, speaking about planning projects in the pipeline and the vast amounts of data being collected and used at the moment. It was pretty weird seeing all of the "cogs" of the public transit machine at work, but they seemed confident and content, a quality not often found in a job based on (often negative) public involvement. We hit up the Geek Cafe right next door where I scarfed down a Turkey Havarti melt (mmmh!) and said our due goodbye's to our friends and the trip.

It was an incredible opportunity, and I'm so glad I was able to go and visit the working world as it is today. I'll be graduating soon, so it's always good to observe your market. The best part of it all, however, was the fact that it was completely free. All expenses (besides alcohol of course) were covered by the UCTC.

Just made it back to the states after completing the most amazing, arduous and incredible journey of my life up to date. I feel like a different, stronger person and I already really miss the wilderness and the other 7 women that I grew so close to over the past 3 1/2 weeks. Nothing feels right at the moment, I feel like I should be preparing to curl up in a teepee around a huge fire of birch logs with all of my girls. However, I am so happy and honored that I got the chance to have that experience and I will hold it in my heart through this year, the hard times and forever. This past month has been so great, I don't even have words that can adequately describe it. Long story short though, I crossed the tip of the Arctic Ocean in a canoe after about 17 days running crazy white water on a secluded northern river and it was the best thing I have ever fucking done.

leaving to spend about 20 days canoeing down the Harricana river and crossing the James Bay of the Arctic ocean :) i cannot wait. i don't have much of a queue, i apologize, but i promise i will be back! bye guys!

Ok so 12 days until I set out with 7 other amazing women to canoe and portage down the Harricana river in Quebec for 19 days or so and eventually cross the tip of the Arctic Ocean at the James bay and end up in Moosonee :)
