Dwarf Fortress on Steam Announcement Teaser
Well, it looks like today’s big news is that Dwarf Fortress is getting a graphical version. Kitfox Games has stepped up to help with marketing, hiring tileset artists, and the like. The gameplay isn’t changing, and the original ASCII version will maintain its ongoing development: this is something between a port and a publishing deal.
It’ll be on Steam and itch.io.
Meanwhile, the Villian Update proceeds apace and Tarn Adams recently fixed a butterfly effect bug where a leader’s shrine encouragement selection was mistakenly nondeterministic, leading to a chain of effects that cascaded into alternate universes during world generation. So par for the course for Dwarf Fortress.
tfw real life is not as fun
I think one of my favorite aspects of Dwarf Fortress is that so much code is interacting with each other that sometimes things happen without explanation--and in an era of wikis and YouTube videos over-explaining every aspect of every game--it's nice to just have a game where birds can explode without apparent cause.
Also, I think it's really neat that in Adventure Mode, the fog of war gets lifted as you explore, and you can see mountains in the distance long before can you spot the river in front of you. Because it makes sense that you can see a mountain from far away even though you'll technically run into the river first.
Dwarf Fortress’ visual design hides a lot of things. Mainly the sizes of certain objects at a glance. While elves make fun of dwarves for being a ‘stunted kind’, both races are actually the same size. Elephants, dragons and cats all take up a single square unit despite being wildly different sizes.
This is common knowledge for the average player, that everything generally takes up a single square of visual space.
What is more uncommon knowledge is what happens when your dwarves are HECKKIN CHONKERS
just look at this fat fuck
Dwarves can vary in sizes within their own kind, and of course some are fat. If they are so fat that they hit the upper limit, this can cause up to 5-10% FPS loss.
How, you ask?
Well, the game is continually running background processes as all games do, and if the chonky boys decide to eat they will continuously bounce off the calculation ceiling and slow the game down as it reassesses their weight. This is unnoticeable in small forts.
In forts with triple digit populations, however, the game will hitch. Not to mention that larger dwarves can wear more pieces of armor if they so desire which will slow them down until they get used to it, making that “attack” on a kobold a well-meaning saunter instead of a boastful charge.
If a dwarf’s description is leaning towards fat, (or Armok help you, a whole fort) and you wish to possibly fix any potential FPS issues, there are a couple solutions of course.
A quick dip in the local lava lake, a fun ride on the atom smasher, or maybe just a neat little starvation room to make them lose weight. Of course there's always the method of lighting them on fire ~just a little~ to burn off the fat. :) (added bonus is that this makes them fireproof if they live)
Is there a benefit to being chonk? Yes! Fatter dwarves take longer to starve and can be better in battle since they can throw their weight around. Is it worth the potential performance drain? Well, I’ll leave it for you to decide.
Apparently Dwarf Fortress won’t stop you from starting adventure mode with over 200 ducks in your party.
BEHOLD MY ARMY
thanks dwarf fortress

hang on I just-

FUN DWARF FACTS
In Dwarf Fortress, there's a statistical chance that all your dwarves could be queer.
Currently, your dwarves may be gay, bi, ace, or straight.
Straight is the most common orientation with 71.2% of dwarves strictly heterosexual, 23.8% bisexual, 3.8% asexual, and 1.2% strictly homosexual. These are dwarf percentages and may not reflect our own human percentages.
Gay marriages can occur within the game as well.
It's awesome. :D
