In honor of International Working Women’s Day, GABRIELA Los Angeles held an action that called attention to the failure of President Aquino in addressing the daily violence Filipina women face, including abuse, poverty, trafficking, corruption, and transphobia. This is part of the worldwide movement calling for Philippine President Aquino to step down from his presidency given his record of human right violations, including his failure to seek justice for Jennifer Laude (26 year old transgender Filipina brutally murdered by a U.S. Marine), his own corruption and pork barrel scams, his failure to provide immediate and long-term relief to Typhoon survivors, and his willingness to further militarize the Philippines through unequal military agreements with the U.S. (VFA/EDCA)
On January 25, 2015, news broke about the Mamasapano bloody encounter in Maguindanao, Philippines, which resulted in 73 casualties and sparked international attention. On February 19th, 2015, we took part in a forum at Rosewood UMC was a space for us to discuss the issue with the community and how we could work together towards a positive future.
GABRIELA LA taught the new "One Billion Rising for Revolution" dance to dozens of community members, including migrant workers, senior citizens, high school students, college students, and Filipina women. We join together with thousands of women to rise up against corruption, poverty, and violence. We rise up for living wages, good jobs, reproductive health and wellness, public education, indigenous land, and for human rights.
