Hi all. I've decided to register the domain name 'Musicfundingblog.com'. I know it isn't that sexy, but it does what it says on the tin. Well, that is the intention.
I'm now in Leeds speaking at the iOn Search Conference on behalf of one of our clients, HootSuite. It's not funding, but social is interesting as what it is doing is audience mapping and sourcing, which can sometimes result in funding, just via the cloud or the crowd. A friend of mine, who will remain nameless for now, suggested that the state should provide arts funding as match funding to those who succeed in crowd funding mechanisms. It is an interesting case; how better can one successfully prove a business and cultural case for a product than getting the end customer to pay for its creation. Hmm...
In a few weeks, I am off to Uganda for Doa Doa, a festival co-organized by UnConvention and Bayimba. Both organizations are publicly funded (in some cases) and very impressive. The idea here is to create a business development structure and strategy to better formulate and understand what the new music markets of East Africa are and continue to be and to eventually, if all's well, encourage all regional governments to become stakeholders in talent development. After coming back from Cape Verde, opportunities for cultural tourism and talent development is significant in the region; Bayimba is an amazing organization. It programs five events a year in Uganda and promotes cultural enterprise across the region. I'll report back from there.
Next blog post (or possibly the one after it), I'll be profiling the live promoter recoupment fund in the Netherlands and compare it to a new scheme at work in Northern England through Generator. Also, I'll be looking at the Korean funding structure, as the more I learn about Psy, the more the state is involved in his (and K Pop in general's) development. Not outright, but through enterprise schemes, direct subsidy and policy intervention.
But for now, I want to chronicle a terrific conference happening in Vienna on June 20 and 21, titled Music Business Days. I found out about it through friends at Music Austria. I'll be in another country then, but I recommend all 6 readers of my blog to go. This year focuses on licensing, which means many different things nowadays.
More soon. I know this post is more relaxed than others. I've been working on the PhD all day so my mind is spent.
