PART 2: [Interview with Ikuma Kobayashi] Appearing as Ciel Phantomhive in the musical "Black Butler: The Green Witch and the Forest of Werewolves"!

Q: I heard that your appearance in the musical "Black Butler" was decided through an audition. Was there anything that made an impression on you during the audition?

A: When I did the audition, my voice was changing rapidly. So, I went to a karaoke booth to practice singing and did lots of vocal practice until the day before, and gave it my all.

I focused not only on singing, but also on acting. If I get strangely nervous during an audition, it will show on my face, so I try not to think too much about it when I go in.

Q: You got to wear the costume for the main visual shoot. How did it feel?

A: I practiced in front of the mirror while looking at the image materials for the shoot that they sent me, and then went to the shoot.

(When I saw the finished visuals) It was a costume that I wouldn't usually wear, so I was surprised at how fresh and cool it looked, like it wasn't me. While filming, I once again realized how important it is to carefully portray the various personalities of Ciel and to fully immerse in the character.

Q: What do you want to learn on the job? Also, what kind of preparation do you want to do before you start practicing?

A: I love singing, so I would like to learn from the singing of the other cast members. I would like to reread the original work and study it thoroughly so that I can properly portray Ciel's character.

Tateishi-san (Toshiki), who plays Sebastian Michaelis, is appearing in "Black Butler" for the third time, so he is reliable and very encouraging. When we were practicing together, he was very kind and chatted with me about school.

Q: Do you have anything in common with Ciel? How would you like to play Ciel?

A: Ciel is so amazing that the only thing we have in common is that we both love sweets (laughs). We both love sweets. I like sweets in general, but I especially love red bean paste, so I often buy it at convenience stores.

Up until now, Ciel has always given off a cool and handsome vibe, but this time he also has a weak and childish side. I think that's the (show's) highlight, so I want to play Ciel with this clear contrast in mind.

Q: (At the time of the interview) There is about a month and a half until the performance. How are you feeling right now? Are you feeling excited? Or are you feeling anxious?

A: Right now I can't help but look forward to the opening day, but I think I'll get even more nervous as the performance gets closer.

Last time when I made my debut, I didn't know the terminology, I didn't know what to do, and I was so nervous for every performance that I was so engrossed in performing on stage that I didn't have time to really feel the audience's reactions, but this time, if I have the time, I'd like to feel the audience's reactions as well.

Q: Finally, please tell us what you would like us to pay attention to in the musical "Black Butler"!

A: I hope that the Green Witch arc will show Ciel's different personalities and different sides to him. There are lots of great songs, so I hope you'll pay attention to those as well!
