PART 2: Interview with Toshiki Tateishi and Ikuma Kobayashi from The Emerald Witch Kuromyu
T/N: Read PART 1 here!
Q: Just like the relationship between a butler and his master.
Tateishi: That's right.
Kobayashi: When I was reading the original work, I thought the relationship between Sebastian and Ciel was really good⦠It's a "contract," but it's also like a "bond" that really hits home. I want to create that with Tateishi-san, so it's really encouraging to hear you say that.
Tateishi: It's okay, it's okay. Once you hear that singing voice, you'll be absolutely fine.
Kobayashi: Uwah...
Tateishi: This is my third time (playing Sebas), so I can honestly say, "Leave it to me." I want you to be able to play Ciel without forcing yourself, and to have your own axis, and to be someone who is true to himself.
If he does that, I think even his own preferences and worries will link well with the role. I really feel like Ikuma's emotions and Ciel's emotions will be naturally connected. And I'm also very excited to see what kind of Sebastian I will become by interacting with Ikuma.
Kobayashi: I hope you will continue to offer me advice and guide me.
Tateishi: Of course!
Kobayashi: That makes me very happy.
Q: By the way, Kobayashi-san, what aspects of the Black Butler musical do you find most appealing?
Kobayashi: I really love that even during serious scenes, there are these comedic moments woven in. Thatās something Iāve always enjoyed in both the original manga and the anime. It feels like it tickles your emotions in a really good way.
Tateishi: Exactly. There are some pretty surreal comedic beats too, so itās not constantly serious.
Q: Because those moments exist, the audience is able to emotionally reset and immerse themselves even when the story becomes tragic.
The Public School Arc is also a very dramatic storyline, and Ciel has some incredibly heavy burdens to bearā¦
Kobayashi: Yes, and in that sense, I really want to preserve the distinctions in Cielās different personality traits that I mentioned earlier.
The cool moments, the impressive moments, and also the times where he shows a childish kind of cuteness. I think those contrasts are a key highlight, so I want to express them very clearly.
Tateishi: This time, itās not just about Ciel. Sullivan, the Emerald Witch, carries a lot on her shoulders, and that influences the entire work.
Kids around that age⦠about thirteen⦠they have pure hearts, and even while struggling, they find their true feelings and begin taking steps forward.
As an adult, I find that incredibly encouraging, and it makes me think, āWow, youth really is something special.ā Sullivan relies on Sebastian for a short period, so I also get to act as a butler toward someone other than Ciel for the first time, which is another exciting point for me as an actor.
Q: Starting with this production, Nobuhiro Mori, who helped establish the early identity of the stage adaptation, returns as director.
Kobayashi-san, you worked with Mori-san on your very first stage production. Do you remember anything from that experience that left an impression?
Kobayashi: Yes. When he talked to the actors, instead of giving direct instructions like āDo it this way,ā he would offer suggestions like āMaybe it would be better if you approached it like this?ā
That kind of guidance and those hints really stuck with me. He told me many things that were incredibly helpful.
Q: And this is your first time working with him, Tateishi-san.
Tateishi: Yes. Iāve only met him twice so far. Once for an interview and once during the visual shoot. But even through those brief interactions, I could feel his passion for digging as deep as possible into the work.
Getting to collaborate with someone like Mori-san makes me genuinely happy, and since he has experience with the earlier Black Butler stage productions, I feel like together we can pursue something even more free and new.
Q: In a sense, this new Black Butler musical returns to its roots while opening a brand new door. Tateishi-san, in the previous interview, you said you wanted to convey the human drama portrayed in the story.
Tateishi: Yes, and this time itās not just Sebastian and Ciel. Practically every character who appears has a deep, weighty background. Itās the kind of cast that makes you say, āI didnāt realize there was this much human drama!ā
And the way that unfolds through the musical numbers becomes a major highlight. Scene after scene; this is truly a Black Butler that can only be experienced as a musical.
Q: There are also events that reframe Sebastian and Cielās relationship, along with some harsh trials Ciel must faceā¦
Kobayashi: (Nods.) This version of Ciel has a slightly different atmosphere from previous stories. Ciel has always been like, āAs long as Sebastian is here, Iāll be fine no matter what.ā
But this time⦠thatās not always the case. There are moments where he canāt behave the way he used to, or where things donāt go as they normally would. I really want people to pay attention to that side of him.
Q: Iām excited to see the next stage you both create.
Kobayashi: Iām truly happy to be able to enter the world of the Black Butler musical like this and to perform alongside Tateishi-san and the rest of the cast. We want to make this a production that fans of Black Butler, fans of the live stage adaptations, and musical lovers alike can all enjoy. Iāll give it everything Iāve got.
Tateishi: Of course I want to help make this production something wonderful and deliver a great performance. But beyond that, Iām finding that the feelings I have not just as an actor, but as a person, are growing stronger.
Our cast spans a wide age range, including Ikuma-kun, and I really feel how much people of different ages can influence one another. Through rehearsals, weāll overcome many things together, and even during the actual performances, the show will continue to evolve. I think that āsomethingā will be powerfully felt from the stage.
Q: It sounds like many things resonate deeply with you personally.
Tateishi: They really do. Because thereās fragility, weakness, and sensitivity, the beauty of the stage can shine through even more.
After a month of rehearsals, I think the show will become something surprising and incredible by opening night. I genuinely believe it will be the best stage production, so I hope everyone will come and witness it.

PART 1: Interview with Toshiki Tateishi and Ikuma Kobayashi from The Emerald Witch Kuromyu
T/N: This is a very sweet interview that I translated! Read the original article here: https://spice.eplus.jp/articles/339963
WARNING: VERY LONG!!
Q: It seems that you two have only met a few times so far, but do you remember your first impressions of each other?
Tateishi: The first time I met Ikuma-kun was on the day of the visual shoot, and at that time he had already finished preparations and was dressed as Ciel.
So rather than thinking of him as Ikuma, I thought, "Oh, it's Ciel." In the photo he looked a little Ciel-like and a bit sulky, but we were able to talk a little, and we talked about things like:
"How old are you now?" "I'm 13," "Ohhh," (laughs).
Seeing how nervous he seemed was really cute, and I felt like my heart was being cleansed. Also, there were sweets at the catering, but one particular chocolate sweet was already goneā¦
Kobayashi: Ah, yes. I was eating sweets the whole time (laughs).
Tateishi: I think that's kind of cute too.
Kobayashi: At the time, Tateishi-san was also wearing Sebastian makeup, so I thought, "Wow, it's the real Sebastian!" and I was really excited. When I actually talked to him, I was happy to find that he was like a really kind oniisan.
Tateishi: *un* (smiling).
Q: This is your second stage play, Kobayashi-san. How did you feel when you were chosen to play Ciel?
Kobayashi: I had a lot of fun onstage last year, so I went to the audition this time with the feeling that I absolutely had to get in.
Ciel has many different personalities, so I thought the key would be to portray those different parts, so I did a lot of research⦠and I was really happy when I got the role.
Tateishi: I'm happy too. I was really looking forward to seeing what the new Ciel would be like, and now, listening to his voice next to me, I think there's a tone of voice that can only come from someone of that age, a realism that can only come from someone of that age.
And the fact that he was so conscious of his acting during the audition⦠I'm impressed again by how amazing it is. This emotion really makes you feel like a butler and master.
Q: It seems that you are currently practicing the songs before the actual rehearsals begin. Isn't the song "Living Butler" [T/N: I'm not actually sure if that's the right name of the song, I'm just basing it off the kanji orz] quite difficult?
Kobayashi: Every song fits the atmosphere of the scene, and I think it's amazing. That's why I practice, wanting to sing and express my acting in tune with the song.
I love singing. But my voice is going through a change now, so sometimes it's hard to get the notes out, but I hope I can keep that under control and do my best.
Tateishi: We've only had one singing rehearsal together so far, but his singing voice is so charming, and he's so good. When you listen to him, you can tell he really loves singing.
I think that "loving" something is the most important prerequisite for expressing oneself, and I have a feeling that he'll get even better once he's onstage. I'm looking forward to practicing together!
Kobayashi: I'm also happy to be able to sing with Tateishi-san.
Tateishi: (nods)
Q: Tateishi-san, you seem really embarrassed.
Tateishi: Iyaaać well, as the oniisan, I'm interacting closely with people younger than me, and it seems like this situation is very refreshing for my manager and staff, but I don't know what to talk about⦠I don't know what to do!
Kobayashi: Hehe (laughs)
Tateishi: I really want Ikuma to do whatever he wants, whether it's in rehearsals or the actual performance, and I want him to play the Ciel that he sees. And I want to accept all of that.
CONT IN PART 2...
PART 2: [Interview with Ikuma Kobayashi] Appearing as Ciel Phantomhive in the musical "Black Butler: The Green Witch and the Forest of Werewolves"!
T/N: Read Part 1 here!
Q: I heard that your appearance in the musical "Black Butler" was decided through an audition. Was there anything that made an impression on you during the audition?
A: When I did the audition, my voice was changing rapidly. So, I went to a karaoke booth to practice singing and did lots of vocal practice until the day before, and gave it my all.
I focused not only on singing, but also on acting. If I get strangely nervous during an audition, it will show on my face, so I try not to think too much about it when I go in.
Q: You got to wear the costume for the main visual shoot. How did it feel?
A: I practiced in front of the mirror while looking at the image materials for the shoot that they sent me, and then went to the shoot.
(When I saw the finished visuals) It was a costume that I wouldn't usually wear, so I was surprised at how fresh and cool it looked, like it wasn't me. While filming, I once again realized how important it is to carefully portray the various personalities of Ciel and to fully immerse in the character.
Q: What do you want to learn on the job? Also, what kind of preparation do you want to do before you start practicing?
A: I love singing, so I would like to learn from the singing of the other cast members. I would like to reread the original work and study it thoroughly so that I can properly portray Ciel's character.
Tateishi-san (Toshiki), who plays Sebastian Michaelis, is appearing in "Black Butler" for the third time, so he is reliable and very encouraging. When we were practicing together, he was very kind and chatted with me about school.
Q: Do you have anything in common with Ciel? How would you like to play Ciel?
A: Ciel is so amazing that the only thing we have in common is that we both love sweets (laughs). We both love sweets. I like sweets in general, but I especially love red bean paste, so I often buy it at convenience stores.
Up until now, Ciel has always given off a cool and handsome vibe, but this time he also has a weak and childish side. I think that's the (show's) highlight, so I want to play Ciel with this clear contrast in mind.
Q: (At the time of the interview) There is about a month and a half until the performance. How are you feeling right now? Are you feeling excited? Or are you feeling anxious?
A: Right now I can't help but look forward to the opening day, but I think I'll get even more nervous as the performance gets closer.
Last time when I made my debut, I didn't know the terminology, I didn't know what to do, and I was so nervous for every performance that I was so engrossed in performing on stage that I didn't have time to really feel the audience's reactions, but this time, if I have the time, I'd like to feel the audience's reactions as well.
Q: Finally, please tell us what you would like us to pay attention to in the musical "Black Butler"!
A: I hope that the Green Witch arc will show Ciel's different personalities and different sides to him. There are lots of great songs, so I hope you'll pay attention to those as well!
PART 1: [Interview with Ikuma Kobayashi] Appearing as Ciel Phantomhive in the musical "Black Butler: The Green Witch and the Forest of Werewolves"!
T/N: I had some free time so I English-translated some interviews from the newest Kuroshitsuji musical :)
Full article: https://www.stardust.co.jp/news/item-47583/
Q: Please tell us what made you get into this world!
A: I started working as a model when I was a baby and became interested in acting, singing and dancing when I entered elementary school. I actually really enjoyed it, so I wanted to try acting and dancing more, and so I joined Stardust [T/N: I'm not familiar with Ikuma's acting career, but this is most likely his agency].
Q: Describe your personality in one wordā¦
A: I do things at my own pace. I don't compare myself to others much, and I don't think I'm very competitive. My older brother and family also tell me that I do things at my own pace.
Q: When are you the happiest?
A: I'm the happiest when I'm hanging out with friends, playing games, or going to the movies. I often play soccer with my friends. I've never actually learned how to play soccer, but sometimes we put on sunscreen and go play soccer outside together, not just in games. Itās a lot of fun!
Q: Do you have any special skills that no one else can beat?
A: My special skill is being able to get along with anyone. I made friends ever since the first day of school. At work, there are a lot of adults, so I can get a little nervous, but I try to talk to them by myself.
Q: Are there any roles you would like to play or jobs you would like to try in the future?
A: I love anime, so I'd like to try my hand at adapting an anime into a live-action film. My senpai at the agency, Yamazaki Kento, has worked on "Kingdom" and "The Disastrous Life of Saiki K." I think he's amazing. I'd also like to try my hand at adapting an anime or manga into a live-action film someday.
Q: How did you feel when you were chosen to appear in the musical "Black Butler: The Green Witch and the Werewolf Forest"?
A: My stage debut was in "Jakkotai" last year, and that experience onstage was so much fun that I decided to put my life on the line for this audition.
When my mother showed me the email I received from the agency saying I'd been accepted, I was so happy that I cried. I was also happy when my family said, "That's amazing!"
