This is mostly me getting my Omegaverse society down, but also so you guys can be filled in on what to expect. I will bold things that will definitely be changed in my writing. Italicised means I talk about it in more detail later. If I have highlighted it, I have changed it from my previous writing. Now, without further ado, lets get into it, shall we?
Sex and Gender:
— there are the biological sexes, male and female (including intersex, though it won’t be mentioned as much). Primary genders are what someone presents as, as it is in real society. Sub-genders, or secondary genders, are known as Alpha, Beta, and Omega.
Alphas and Omegas have hierarchy levels within their class which are known as Apex Alphas and Fecund Omegas. Apex, in general, means something that is peak or at the top, while fecund means fertile.
Apex Alphas, in the past, were in the position of rulers and took another Alpha, but not Apex, as their mate. Apex Alphas are above other Alphas and stand at the top of the hierarchy, which is presented by their powerful and strong scents.
Fecund Omegas, in the past, were treated akin to livestock due to their high probability of pregnancy, even higher than other Omegas. Their place was generally not recorded, used simply to produce an Alpha’s heir and other nobility would do the same. A Fecund Omega’s scent is said to drive an Alpha crazy, spurring them into a prolonged rut cycle.
— sub-genders can vary from when they are presented. Signs can show as early as 4-6 years old, but it is not officially recorded until they experience a heat/rut, which presents itself within this time period. An official cycle, or adult cycle, is presented at the end of puberty. Scents are presented first, but can evolve as the sub-gender fully presents itself.
All males are born with a penis. All females are born with a vagina. This does not change. An Alpha female will still have their biologically female anatomy, but will also have a penis. Male Omegas will still have their penis, and their uterus will be attached via their anus.
Male Omegas cannot impregnate and commonly have cesarean section done. Less than 0.001% of pups are pushed out of a male Omega. This could cause damage to both parties.
Alpha females retain ovaries and can get pregnant, however, the probability of pregnancy is less than 0.01%. The penis of the Alpha is also sheathed unless aroused, and therefore about to engage in intercourse.
Despite all of this, there is a delicate process to reverse or “switch” one’s sub-gender. This is known either as “bitching” or “studding” **
— Population percentages are as follows: Betas = 80%, Alphas = 10%, Omegas = 7%, Apex Alphas = 2%, Fecund Omegas = 1%.
Sub-genders wear collars to distinguish their class. This is because some Omegas or Alphas will cover up their scent due to personal reasons. Collars are given to the Alpha/Omega after the end of their first “true” heat/rut when they are about 15-18 years of age (when puberty ends). Omegas and Alphas will present before this, but it becomes official when they experience their adult heat/rut.
Adult heats/ruts are the common idea of the cycle you’re used to seeing in fanfiction. There are other classifications of the cycles, and I’ve decided that mild heats and ruts can occur when puberty begins. Collars are still given when the adult cycle is finished, but presentation comes before that.
Presentation can begin with scents, as well as a mini heat/rut. These are much more milder than the adult cycles in which they occur when the young Alpha/Omega finds themselves craving physical attention and affection. Typically, this lasts less than a week, around 3-5 days, and is dealt with by family (or pack) cuddles. Warmth and familiar scents sate the instincts of the Alpha/Omega and these mini cycles typically occur once every 3 years until puberty begins.
Apex Alphas wear gold collars, Alphas wear black. Omegas wear white collars, while Fecund Omegas wear silver. Betas do not wear collars and it is frowned upon for a Beta to wear an accessory that can be mistaken as a collar (chokers mostly, but thicker or tighter necklaces are also “forbidden”)
Fecund Omegas, because of their intoxicating scent, are required to have matching bracelets as well as their collar. They are also required to wear scent blockers.
— Bitching is the term used for when an Alpha switches their sub-gender to Omega. Vice versa, an Omega switching to an Alpha is called studding.
There is no safe way to switch sub-gender, as it could drastically change the biology of the Alpha/Omega and may not be reversible should any problems arise. Legally, there is no option. Requiring a new collar to show the changed identity is not only seen as being disrespectful (mocking the other gender or looking down on them) but also forbidden, as most believe the collars to be an official declaration of one’s sub-gender. This is not the case, as many Alphas/Omegas have successfully switched and are much happier, with little to no side effects.
Illegally switching sub-genders is technically the only way, usually by having a trusted friend help one throughout the process. There have been some professionals (doctors) who have explained a possible safe way to switch genders, by it is still technically an “in development” process that receives loads of backlash, delaying progression. For the most part, many believe it to be a way of mocking the opposing sub-gender or even going as far as to insult those who wish to change and implying they have nefarious motives. Though this isn’t true, the articles explaining how to do so make others feel as though it is.
The act of bitching requires an Alpha to engage in “Omega-like” behaviors (which is why many think it’s mocking). While Alphas are often outspoken and dominant, an Alpha undergoing treatment will have to become more submissive to other Alphas, pushing down their instincts. There is also medicine involved, though that is why the process is so risky. Without the medicine for Omegas, the process would be incomplete and permanently damage one’s biology. Another key component in bitching is to ingest another Alpha’s semen. Most articles explain how it’s another way to diminish the Alpha instincts, by submitting to another, which is often why the process requires a trusted friend, or friends, to finish. By this time, the scent of the Alpha will begin to change, with the help of medicine, and will begin to unconsciously commit Omega-like behaviors (creating large nests, fussing over others, acting more submissive around more dominant Alphas, etc.). Once this happens, the only step left is for them to have a heat cycle, often aided by HSD.
The act of studding is the reverse of bitching, with an Omega switching to an Alpha. Engaging in Alpha-like behavior is not as frowned upon as much as an Alpha engaging in Omega behaviors, though it is still enough to have people questioning. Similar to bitching, studding requires medicinal treatment, engaging in societal expectations for Alphas, though the last step is not as simple. While a bitched Omega only has to ingest another’s semen to finish the process, a studded Alpha will have to ingest the blood of other Alphas + an Omega’s slick (the fluid that excretes from their genitalia when in heat). This makes the process even more tedious than bitching, but has the biggest chance of success.
If an Alpha is trying to be bitched, their own semen will not work. Same with Omegas, they can’t save heat slick to aid their process, it will not work and the process with be botched. Also, the process has to begin after the most recent heat/rut cycle, as having one during the process with also give unintended side effects, such as being an Alpha with a heat or being an Omega who becomes aggressive and dominant during their heats (which is uncommon). This is why a trusted friend of the same/opposite sub-genders are recommended, if not required.
Retrieving a collar to show the change is technically the last step, but most scents will have been muddied enough for some to pass as Betas unless it’s their cycle. Other times, the new Alpha/Omega will have a friend retrieve an extra collar for them to wear (many backups are given to each presented gender lest an incident occur).
Scenting and Relationships:
— Scents are what every individual has. Each person, Alpha, Beta, or Omega, has a unique scent. Most of the time, Alpha scents are more earthy and overwhelming. Omega scents are usually rich and sweet. Scent glands, in general, overlap with sweat glands.
Scenting is the action of rubbing one’s scent glands on their mate. This can be done for plenty of reasons, but it does feed into the protective and often possessive nature of an Alpha. Bonded mates do not have to worry about scenting as much due to their bond carrying the scent.
An Alpha’s scent comes from their neck, inner thighs/genital area, underarms, shoulders, and tips of fingers. Most Alphas scent their mates by rubbing their neck on theirs. Some will even rub the tips of the fingers along their mate’s neck. Apex Alphas are not much different, but do have a stronger intensity in the areas than if they were regular Alphas.
An Omega’s scent comes from their neck up to their ears, inner wrists, and inner thigh/genital area. Omegas can scent their mate, but the smell will not linger as strongly as an Alpha’s scent. Fecund Omegas are required to block their scents completely due to their scent acting as an aphrodisiac to all Alphas.
Betas do have scents, however, they cannot smell their own scent nor smell others. They have instincts to determine if someone is another class, but that’s all. Most Beta scents are more subdued and natural, similar to an ocean or a summer day.
— Typically, a mate is an Alpha’s or Omega’s partner. A Beta’s partner is usually just that, a partner/significant other/etc. This is mostly because only Alphas and Omegas can bond with someone else, therefore claiming a mate. Betas lack the instincts to claim a mate and create a bond mark.
Bonding is the intimate action of putting a mark on a mate. Bond marks are a conscious decision on the Alpha/Omega’s accord and breaks skin. A bond gives the mate an increased sense involving their mate, even if they’re far apart.
Bonds are typically permanent. A temporary bond is when two mates claim each other, but the bonding is not consented by the other party. For example, if a Beta has sex with an Alpha and the Alpha tries to bond with the Beta, but the Beta does not want it, the mark will end up being temporary. These can last anywhere from a month, to 6 months, to a year.
(Permanent) Bonds can not be removed. Once bonded, that bond will never fade and can only be replaced by an Alpha’s bonding mark. This can only be done 6 months after the initial bond, without a “touch-up” which means the Alpha/Omega has abandoned their mate.
It’s common for bonds to be created during heats/ruts, especially when the cycles have synced up.
— Alphas have ruts. Omegas have heats. Betas do not have either, and female Betas (those born with uteruses) will still menstruate.
Heats are an Omega’s fertility window, so to speak. Omegas have high fertility, of course, which stands at 40-50% (this can vary). During heat, an Omega’s fertility rate increases to 90%. Heats last 3-9 days, having an average of 7 days. A Fecund Omega, however, has a fertility window of 75-80% normally; with their heat, it is increased to 100%. Fecund heats last 5-14 days, having an average of 10 days.
An Alpha experiences something similar which is called a rut. An Alpha in a rut is dangerous, as their aggressiveness can bleed into violence if denied. Ruts last the same length as heats, so a regular Alpha will have it last 3-9 days, with an average of 7, while Apex Alphas will have it last 5-14 days, with an average of 10. This can be dangerous for them when they don’t have a partner to take care of them, since Apexes can’t quite handle themselves alone.
During both heats and ruts, the individual will be more susceptible to giving into their instincts, making them more aggressive. An Omega in heat will spur an Alpha into a rut, which can sync up their cycles. An Alpha’s rut can also spur an Omega into heat, but it is not seen as such a dangerous occurrence like an Omega’s heat is.
Nesting is a term used when an Omega begins to create a safe space for themselves during their heat. This could be in their normal room or in a smaller area (eg. a closet). Although it refers to an Omega before their heat, Alphas tend to also begin a subtle nesting period before their rut; they do not have a specific Nest like Omegas, however, and thus is allowed to be entered without their consent. This is considered rude, but is not frowned upon. A Nest is the area an Omega has made their own and it is not only rude, but also considered immoral and can be akin to rape if someone enters an Omega’s nest without their consent.
— Courting relationships are traditional and non-traditional, depending on how they were raised. An Alpha typically courts an Omega or Beta and it is seen as a courtship which is traditional; non-traditional is when an Omega or Beta, usually an Omega, asks to court an Alpha/Beta.
Traditionally, an Alpha would also have to ask for an Omega’s Alpha packmate for their hand in courtship. This Alpha could be their father, sibling, close friend, etc. but is usually the father. Nowadays, Alphas just need the consent of the Omega they wish to court.
Collars come into play within relationships as well. An Omega or Alpha in a relationship will have their partner choose a ribbon for them to wear, displaying that they are in a serious courtship. This way, the ribbon will carry their partner’s scent. Betas do not have ribbons, but can choose ribbons for their Alpha/Omega.
Alpha/Beta and Beta/Omega relationships are no longer frowned upon, but there are some places where they are not accepted or judged. This is because in the past, it was feared that Betas would wipe out the Omega class.
Polyamorous relationships are also accepted into society, however some are more acceptable than others. A/O/A ships, for example, are less acceptable than A/O/O ships. Less than 0.01% of poly relationships are all Alpha or all Omega.
Marriage ceremonies, while are now focused on a legal document to officiate the marriage, are still common amongst Alphas and Omegas. Marriage ceremonies consist of an average wedding, with the Alpha/Omega taking off their mate’s ribbon to replace with matching bells. Some wear rings as well, but most married mates will sport matching bells only.
Betas are not accepted to have a ritualistic marriage ceremony because they don’t wear collars. Many Betas feel as if they should have a marriage ceremony with their Alpha/Omega, but most Alphas/Omegas do not want Betas in marriage ceremonies. This causes a rift between the classes.
Society (medicine, requirements for schools/work):
— Medicine available includes suppressants, birth control, heat spurring drugs, and scent patches.
Suppressants are typically pills that are taken similar to birth control and prevent an Omega from having a heat. Some Omegas require an increased dosage as they get older. There are also suppressant shots, which are given to adult Omegas to carry in case of an unexpected heat. These are temporary and last long enough for the Omega to get to a safe space.
Suppressants for Alphas also exist, with the main suppressant being the Alpha suppressant collars. However, another form of suppressant is similar to the pills Omegas take and are very common in teen and young adult Alphas who are focused on working in life and can’t take off time for their rut cycles.
Scent patches, also known as scent blockers, are medicinal patches that go over scent glands to block the scent. Some patches focus on blocking the scent completely, while others dull the scent so it is not as potent. Most adult Omegas switch to scent patches after school.
Birth control is given to female Betas or those with uteruses. It is highly recommended for only Beta use, as it can result in making an Omega infertile. Birth control can be overpowered by Alphas if they’re in rut, however. 50% chance for Alphas and 90% chance for Apexes.
Heat spurring drugs, or HSDs, are drugs that force an Omega into their heat. It was originally produced to have an Omega sync up with their mate’s rut cycle, since it isn’t as common for heats to begin due to an Alpha’s rut. As time has gone on, the drug has been given restrictions on how much can be sold and to who due to the increase of people using them similar to date rape drugs. Only one pill package is given to an Omega every 6 months and backgrounds checks are mandatory each time. Each package contains a month of suppressants to push back a heat and then an increased libido pill for the week the Omega wants their heat to start.
Another form of scent blocker, a more recent invention, are Alpha suppressant collars. These collars are over the counter suppressants for Alphas who wish to dull their scent. Some Alphas use these collars to quiet their scent while in a rut if they don’t live alone.
Transition medicine is typically just prescribed or over the counter bottles of estrogen/testosterone, with it mostly being over the counter. Many who have it prescribed either have confirmed with their doctor’s about their change or require it to aid in finishing presenting, regardless of transitioning or not. It’s usually acquired via over counter, spending large amounts of money to buy one small bottle (it’s believed that higher cost will decrease the percentage of those who transition, but it instead just increases the percentage of those with botched transitions).
— Some other society things to go into detail with:
Scenting is done in public and in private. Public scenting involves the scent glands on the neck and wrists. Some Alphas will rub their fingers against their mate’s neck glands, doubling as massaging and scenting. Scenting in private is more focused on the inner thighs and is not acceptable in public.
Consent is controversial in both Alphas and Omegas. Some believe an Omega must consent to engage in intercourse before their heat, while others believe an Omega in heat can properly consent. An Alpha rutting is the only form of consent needed, despite them falling into a similar state of mind during their cycle. Some Alphas find this to be inconsiderate, while Omegas will also stand with them on the issue.
Schools require official documentation of the sub-gender before enrollment, as well as proof of what the individual uses (suppressants, scent patches, etc.). Co-ed schools are common, while there are a few Alpha only schools and less Omega only schools. Sex and primary gender do not factor into this separation. Apexes go through regular Alpha precautions, but Fecunds are a rare case and some schools may not accept them based on the fact they don’t know how to take care of them.
Jobs in society are similar to schools. Alphas and Omegas need to show their full documentation and Omegas have to prove they’re on suppressants or some form of scent control medicine, as well as having a shot to administer in emergencies. Fecunds don’t have a specific set of regulations and would follow regular Omega procedure.
Abortion in Japan is only legal if the mother is in dire need of one; this translates to the Omegaverse world as well. Anyone who becomes pregnant is not allowed to get an abortion unless there is risk to mother and child and doctors must sign off on it. A Beta that mated with an Alpha, however, will undergo more procedures to try and avoid this, as almost all A/B relations spawn Alpha pups. Due to this, some Beta mothers have lost their life and child due to doctors trying to not have the operation done.
Alphas of all types have what people call an “Alpha voice” which is basically a commanding tone of their voice which demonstrates dominance as well as forcing others into submission. Many Alphas do not have this ability to use at will and some don’t know if they even have it. However, all Apex Alphas have an Alpha voice. They are the only ones able to use it at will and they are seen as a threat to the Omega class due to their ability to establish dominance. Modern society shows not many are in fear of it and there is no need to establish dominance, but some (pretentious Alphas and Omegas) see it as a “setback” to traditional hierarchy.
Extras:
* the Apex Alpha and Fecund Omega terms are not of my own creation, just their place/role in society. Lots of other creators have used these terms, but there isn’t a specific place they took inspiration from. I will admit I don’t know exactly how I came across these terms but I’ve used them for a few years.
* I have a couple of mentions with the Apex Alphas and Fecund Omegas, mostly small drabbles, but I can always expand on more if need be. However, Fecunds and Apexes probably won’t change much compared to the regular Omegas and Alphas, so you guys won’t be missing out on much of anything.
* Apexes and Fecunds are rare and most characters fall into the other three categories. What does this mean? You can’t have every Omega be a Fecund and every Alpha be an Apex. A story where Bokuto is an Apex and Akaashi is a Fecund is fine, but don’t try to make Kuroo an Apex as well. Akaashi can be an Alpha, but not an Apex. Same with Oikawa; he can be an Alpha, but not an Apex.
Who do I see being Apexes? Well, typically Aran, Ushijima, Bokuto, and Iwaizumi. I sometimes like to see Apex Daichi and Apex Sakusa, but I mostly see them as regular Alphas.
* Will I ever expand more? Maybe, maybe not. Will I dive into politics and movements in this universe? Probably not.
* This is mainly for Haikyuu, yeah. I’ve used a couple of these before and looking back, I’m surprised nobody went “huh, what’s that?” (like Bokuto and Akaashi with their scent collars). I’m not going back and changing any of my stories, but my newer stories will follow this guideline, essentially (like in Pink Skirt, both Matsukawa and Hanamaki will have their respective collars). Any requests that don’t follow this guideline will either be deleted or adapted.

I know I’ve been away and I’ve been thinking of what I wanna do now that I’m going on a burnout and as of right now, I don’t know. My cat’s really sick and so I haven’t been worrying about writing anything because of that, since all my energy is spent taking care of him and struggling to take care of myself. I might end the hiatus with a new blog or just a note that says I’m done with writing for now, but in this moment I don’t know. It’s a small update and I’m sure it’s not the update you wanted from me, but I have nothing else to give. I was working on the Bokuto dilf thirst before all this happened, so I’ll probably still post it regardless of what happens, but it might be the last thing I do.
