Omega Shen Qingqiu who is fed up with all the courtship gifts he receives. It's okay, it's entertaining, but at this point in his life he is quite tired. His Binghe has fallen (been pushed and stabbed haha oops) into the Endless Abyss, and he is really fed up with courtship gifts and having to answer civilized letters rejecting them.
So, just to spite him, Shang Qinghua sends him a courtship gift. Just to make fun of him. It's a silly little thing, literally. A flower with two long light blue petals pressed with with the description below "Hatsune Miku Flower".
Shen Qingqiu keeps it.
Okay, so if he rejects the courtship, he's supposed to return the gifts and send a rejection letter. But damn! He knows Shang Qinghua did it as a fucking joke to get on his nerves. So, he keeps the damn flower and doesn't waste his time sending the rejection letter.
Shang Qinghua comes over for tea after that, and they stay up later than would be appropriate discussing some fandom shit. In reality, time passes and it is late at night when Shen Qingqiu kicks Shang Qinghua out of his house.
A few days later, Shang Qinghua sends another gift. The truth is that, at that moment, BOTH of them have forgotten the nonsense of courtship gifts and all that. But Shang Qinghua had gone down to the village, had seen some ugly and ridiculously colorful fans, and decided that it would make a great ironic gift for his friend. So he buy them, wrap them with the most delicate care, and send them off.
And then, a few days later, he sends a very ridiculous collection of novels he found directly to his chaotic reader friend. He does so, of course, knowing that he would not be able to carry those books on his return, taking advantage of the parcel service to lighten his trip.
So when he gets to Cang Qiong, he's suddenly being looked at horribly by the other Alphas and he's just—hey, he didn't do anything wrong!!!
Shen Qingqiu enjoys his books, uses his colorful fans exclusively to hit Shang Qinghua, and only once regrettably uses one for a whole day until he realizes it and just hits Shang Qinghua swung his fan very hard, horrified.
Shang Qinghua keeps coming to drink tea, gossip and complain almost every afternoon. He often stays up late at night. At one point, Liu Qingge just stops with Shen Qingqiu to say:
"You shouldn't be with an Alpha who is courting you without a chaperone."
And Shen Qingqiu is just: "???? What Alpha is courting me?"
When Shang Qinghua arrives a while later with some sweet buns for tea, Liu Qingge rolls his eyes and runs away.
And the entire sect believes that they are in a fairly advanced phase of their courtship. Of course, it is a very serious matter; they meet all the standards of taking it as seriously as they should. Gifts, meals, providing for him; even Shen Qingqiu looks happier, using the gifts Shang Qinghua gives him to show how he accepts his courtship, eating his snacks in public, composing new songs for him.
(Shen Qingqiu doesn't compose a shit. He plays pop songs that Shang Qinghua misses on the guqin and enjoy some music he thought he would never hear again.)
When the courtship has already lasted more than half a year, everyone is restless. Although it is true that some courtships are long... The truth is that in half a year, they should already be preparing a wedding! A small ceremony at least! But neither of them seems to talk about weddings, or ceremonies, or trousseaus, or preparations, and they are all NERVOUS.
Could it be that the two peak lords are holding such a private ceremony that not even their pack of peak lords will be invited? That was rude!
Once again, Shen Qingqiu and Shang Qinghua still have no idea what the hell is going on with them. Why do all peak lords behave so strangely? Why do they keep insisting that they go see a fortune teller? What the hell are they talking about???
Can you write a Klaus Mikaelson x omega!reader fic where the reader is a rare omega trying to hide from alphas during her heat, but Klaus catches her scent and loses control?
Maybe she’s terrified of him at first, but Klaus’s instincts won’t let him leave her alone—he tracks her down, locks her away, and tells her he’s the only one strong enough to “handle” her. He goes full possessive/feral alpha.
Persistent Alpha-Alpha!Klaus
It wasn’t anything new for Y/n. She’d been avoiding Alphas all her life-Klaus however was different…determined…
Alphas that chased her would eventually find something else to chase or distract them-Y/n would find a cute Beta to shove in their path and they would be gone. She had tried to do the same thing with Klaus-attempting to distract him with Caroline, knowing that that perfect blond vampire had a thing for the Hybrid however he didn’t even give her the time of day-actually seeming annoyed by her presence/voice/scent-all of it.
He only wanted her.
Y/n was a member of one of the few lines of extremely rare Omegas. Her line, along with 5 others (2 of which had died off centuries ago) were strong smelling, extremely fertile Omegas. Many Alphas were overwhelmed by her scent and actually avoided her because of it-the strong scent being too much for them to be around.
Klaus Mikaelson however, didn’t seem to have that problem.
No matter what she did she couldn’t shake him, he followed her everywhere. If she was walking somewhere she would see his wolf in the woods following her until she got there, If she was in town she would often see him out the window. If she was at the grille with her friends he was at the bar watching over her and though she would never admit it-his presence made her feel pretty and wanted-something no other Alpha had ever made her feel.
Still, she tried to get him to go for Caroline, not wanting a mate but he still never took the bait. She did try harder though, Caroline seemed determined to make the Hybrid want her and that also seemed to be what finally pushed the near-feral-for-her-Alpha a bit too far.
Caroline had cornered him at the Grille as he and Kol played pool (though it was mostly just Kol as Klaus watched over Y/n) and something in Y/n didn’t like seeing the Barbie vampire running her hands all over his chest. As she leaned in and shoved her lips against his though she’d had enough, getting up and leaving the Grille to head back to the Boarding House-feeling completely overwhelmed.
She needed to get herself under control. She had never wanted an Alpha before (other than craving affection and touch-mostly during her heats) so she couldn’t figure out why her Omega was so needy for Klaus but she tried very hard to keep her mind on anything else. She had been so focused on Klaus for days, her mind becoming frazzled and scared, that she hadn’t noticed the change in her as her heat approached.
As she walked through town she noticed people looking at her…she noticed Alphas looking at her as she tried to speed up.
‘Hey Y/n-are you alright?’ A deep voice asked and she turned her head to see Shane-an Alpha that had graduated a year before her-his scent was immediately heavy and loud-as if announcing to everyone that he was showing off to court this Omega.
‘Is he bothering you? Leave her alone Shane-you can come with me Y/n, let’s get you somewhere safe, huh?’ This Alpha was an ex of Elena’s from several years before and he was puffing out his chest-growling as 2 more Alphas she barely recognized came closer.
‘Please? Please stop…I can’t-I can’t…can’t breathe…’ she was gasping for air that she felt like she couldn’t get deep enough into her lungs as her world began spinning-the overwhelming scent of Alphas smothering her.
Her legs gave out and someone caught her which began a loud explosion of growls all around her-Y/n shutting her eyes and pulling her knees to her chest as she was bumped around, loud snarls and roars now making her feel like her ear drums were going to pop. Through all of the hazy scents in the air she could smell one that wasn’t driving her crazy-the scent of pine trees and the forests after a heavy rain-it cut through everything else and gave her some comfort.
‘Hey, let’s get you out of here hun.’ This voice was deep and grainy and the hands that lifted her felt like they burned on her bare skin making her whimper and try to pull away. Her head felt like it was full of cotton-everything was muffled and off but a moment later that burning on her skin was gone and she was held against a strong chest-the lovely scent now surrounding her as she heard more growls and loud cries of pain.
She finally held tightly to someone and the growls and voices stopped before she was placed into a comfortable bed with that same wonderful scent. She held tightly to an Alpha that didn’t let her go, clutching him like a lifeline until her foggy mind finally cleared again.
Hungry? She was hungry. Her stomach growled in agreement as she thought this but as the skin on hers began moving she clutched her hands tighter-refusing to let go.
‘Alright, it’s okay. I’ll have someone bring us something, just relax gorgeous-Shh, you’re safe. Alpha is not leaving you.’ She kept her grip on the Alpha, her hands trailing up under his shirt making her body relax as she felt her fingers touch his skin. ‘It’s okay, you touch all you need to pup. Such a good Omega you are, so good. Shh…’ as the Alpha shushed her she held tight to him, bringing his hand close to her face and wrapping her lips around his thumb before she could even think about what she was doing. ‘Oh fuck-such a sweet Omega you are, aren’t you. Does sucking like a good little pup make you feel better? Hmm? You suck on your Alpha as much as you need.’ Y/n whined as he said that, giving her permission while her hands reached down to his belt, tugging at it pathetically. ‘Oh no precious-you don’t have to-‘ she cut him off as she got the belt open and whimpered pathetically when she couldn’t get his pants open. ‘Okay, okay! Alright little love-you suckle on Alpha all you need to.’ He promised, tugging his pants down just enough to free his hard cock-moaning as she got her lips around it. ‘Such a sweet Omega-God I’m so fucking lucky!’
Y/n had never heard an Alpha talk to her the way this one was and she loved it-all the sweet names, the soft voice that Alphas so rarely display while she is in distress, the gentle hands not pushing her anywhere-just letting her do what she needed-never before had she met an Alpha this kind-and she couldn’t even force herself to focus enough to thank him.
As she felt his fingers run through her hair she closed her eyes and suckled harder, the musky Alpha scent relaxing her tense muscles and giving her a chance to finally calm down. ‘You coming back to me, love? Your eyes are clearing up…you went into heat surrounded by Alphas-your head is gonna feel a bit fuzzy for a while. It’s alright, precious-you just keep sucklin’ like a good little girl.’ He spoke, running his fingers through her hair. ‘My good girl-Alpha is right here.’
Y/n looked up from where her head was resting on his lap and could see those familiar blue eyes that had been watching her for weeks-Klaus had saved her…after she’d tried to pawn him off on Caroline, he’d still saved her. The Hybrid ran his fingers through her hair as she continued to suckle on him, his thick cock stretching her mouth around it but he didn’t move-clearly desperate for more according to his scent but he never moved even an inch. She curled her tongue around the tip as she pulled back before pushing back down on him.
‘No Omega-you don’t need to-Ah! Oh fuck…g-good Omega-oh such a good little girl…’ he growled, fangs bared as she took him into her throat. ‘A-Alphas so close baby-oh Fuck!’ Klaus moaned, fingers running through her hair before she felt his cock twitch and she pulled back, swallowing everything that her Alpha gave her making her hum excitedly. ‘You like that? Does my Omega like suckling on her Alphas cum? Hmm? My sweet little slut, drinking my cum down like a good little girl-oh fuck…wouldn’t you much rather Alpha give you my cum up in your belly? Hmm? I know you need it-need Alpha to rut you so good-and I will-Alpha will fill your little womb with all of my cum just for you, fill you with my pups…you’ll give your Alpha pups, won’t you?’ She nodded quickly, feeling slick leaking from her hole as she moved to climb up his chest, his hands ripping her clothes all off and tossing them aside. Just as she had his slick cock pressed to her hole there was a knock on the door and her Alpha growled angrily-a sound she was instantly glad wasn’t directed at her.
‘Niklaus? Miss.Forbes is at the door looking for you?’ Elijah’s voice spoke up and Y/n felt her heart nearly leap from her chest as she whined.
‘Oh baby, no! Shh…hush now precious, all yours, Alpha is all yours my good girl. Shh…let her in.’ The Omega in his lap looked up at him abruptly but he just pulled her closer to his chest and pushed his cock up into her dripping hole.
‘Alpha…’ Y/n breathed, his arms holding her still as the Beta walked into the room-stopping short as she saw the naked Omega on his lap.
‘What the fuck…but you-‘
‘Am only attracted to Omegas-that’s right Caroline.’ He spoke before thrusting up into his Omega as deep as he could. ‘I tried to tell you that but you didn’t listen.’
‘But she gave you to me! She didn’t want you!’ Caroline whined prompting the growl that sprung from the Omega which came out much more like a hiss than anything.
‘Mine!’ Y/n hissed, her claws digging into Klaus’ shoulders and making him moan.
‘Oh Fuck, all yours lovely Omega, Shh, all yours. Now be a good little Omega and let-Ah! Just let Alpha rut this needy little cunt! Fuck!’ He growled, thrusting up into her slick hole and loving her sweet little sounds as he rut his cock up into her. ‘Good Omega-I think that’s enough of the visual lesson-get out Caroline.’ Klaus growled, his warning seeming to get her attention.
‘Come find me when you’re done with the Omega and maybe I’ll forgive you.’ She told him, glaring at Y/n who did actually move to jump on her this time-though Klaus held her to himself too tightly.
‘Elijah! Get her out!’ The Alpha demanded, his brother grabbing ahold of the young vampire and dragged her from the room. ‘Hush now Omega, cum for your Alpha like a good little girl! Cum on my cock so that Alpha can fill your needy little belly with my pups! Cum on my cock precious!’ He demanded, his needy Omega unable to refuse.
‘Alpha!’ She whined as she came, her sharp canines pressing against his neck but never biting down.
‘Go ahead Omega-do it!’ Klaus demanded and she snarled, digging her fangs into his neck and marking him with her scent. ‘Good girl! Gonna take my knot now Omega! Gonna take my knot and start growing my pups up in this belly! Oh Fuck! Be my good Omega-give me babies!’ He demanded, growling and shoving his knot as deep into her cunt as he could, fangs digging into her throat as he pumped her belly full of his cum.
‘Ahh! Alpha! Fill me up! Want your pups! Please?! Please?’ She whined, claws digging into his shoulders as she tried to pull him even closer.
‘No need to beg Love, Alpha will always fill your needy belly. My perfect little Omega is gonna give me perfect pups. Good girl…’ he shushed her, kissing her head and rubbing her back gently as he watched her drift off to sleep, contently filling her womb once more before allowing himself to sleep with his Omega resting contently on his chest.
Pairings: Alpha!Robby x Omega!Reader, Alpha!Jack x Omega!Reader
A/N: get your warnings from the previous chapter. This is a long ass chapter for me, but I didn't feel like splitting it.
Jack navigated through the early morning traffic, shooting the occasional glance in your direction. You sat rigid, clutching your bag as if it would disappear if you loosened up at all. He wished there was something he could do to help put you at ease but he didn’t know if the tension was from your ex showing up or Robby and him going all alpha on you. Probably a combination of both.
“You got your key ready?” he asked, because he had to say something.
You blinked, startled, then fished your key from the front pocket of your bag. “Yeah. I’ll be quick, I promise.”
“We’re not on a deadline. Just get what you need.” He pulled up to the curb you indicated and glanced up at your building. It looked like a hundred other apartment buildings in the city, an old three-story single family that had been turned into units sometime after the cold war.
He placed a hand on your arm to stop you when you reached for the handle. “Let me take a look first, yeah?”
Jack climbed out of the truck, eyes scanning the street looking for anything that seemed out of place. It would be easier if he was familiar with the area but some things would stick out just the same. Finally, he moved over and opened your door, offering you a hand to help you out.
Your cheeks flushed and Jack bit back his smile. Now wasn’t the time. He let you lead the way up the steps and trailed behind, senses still attuned for danger. Your hand trembled as you unlocked the door and you hesitated before stepping inside and punching in a code on an alarm.
“Wait here,” you said. “I’ll just be a sec.”
He planted himself in the doorway, arms crossed, all business. He could see most of the apartment from the doorway. Cheap furniture, no pictures, no personal touches, impeccably clean. The place was sterile, like you were ready to run at a moment’s notice, and he hated it.
You were back in less than five minutes with a navy duffel bag draped over your shoulder. He raised an eyebrow as he glanced between it and you. “Sweetheart, that’s not even enough clothes. Where are your nesting things?”
You blinked at him, cheeks burning. “I’m not really…I mean this is enough. I can get the rest later if I need to.”
Jack didn’t move, just kept looking at you, waiting for the real answer.
After a beat, you slumped, defeated. “I didn’t want to be too presumptuous, and I thought alphas didn’t like omegas building a nest in their home unless they were bonded.”
He snorted. “Where did you get that bullshit from? That asshole ex? A real alpha will let an omega do whatever they need to be comfortable. Any omega.” His eyes studied your face, trying to see if you were absorbing what he was telling you. “Where’s the rest of your stuff?”
You cleared your throat. “In my room. Could you help me?”
Jack was surprised you wanted him in your space but he shoved it down before it could show on his face. “Lead the way.” He followed you down the hall, pausing in the doorway of your bedroom. More cheap furniture and a bed on a Hollywood frame. There was one picture of you with a dog, mountains in the background. His nose twitched as your soft, sweet omega scent flooded his senses. Jesus, you smelt divine. He couldn’t wait until the aroma filled every corner of their home.
“There are empty boxes and some tape over there by the wall,” you said, catching his attention as you pulled another suitcase from your closet.
You really were prepared to bolt at a moment’s notice. Thank fuck that idiot sent those flowers to the ED so he and Robby could get involved. He would have lost his mind had you just disappeared with no word.
He eyed the couple of blankets and mound of pillows that made up your nest. It wasn’t near enough to possibly make you happy. God, he hated this asshole more every moment. He figured three boxes should get it all. Once he was finished, you cleared your throat. “If you’ll finish throwing my clothes in the suitcase, I’ll pack up the bed.”
That made sense. It was one thing to allow him in your room, another entirely to let him touch your nest, tainting it with his scent. “Make sure you get all of it. Don’t half-ass it, that’s how people get dead,” he said as the two of you switched places.
You choked on a laugh. “I don’t think Grant is going to kill me with fuzzy blankets.”
“You don’t know that.” His voice was light, playful and it felt like some of the tension drained from the room.
Together you packed your life away, not that there was much to pack. When he questioned it, you’d confessed most of it was in storage. Just in case. You carried your duffle while Jack grabbed the suitcase. He then stood at the bottom of the stairs while you rolled the three boxes of bedding down to him at your insistence. There was no point in going up and down when nothing in the boxes was going to break anyway.
It didn’t seem worth picking a fight over so Jack let you have your way. He continued to scan the street as he loaded your things into the back of the truck. “You ready?” he asked when you appeared beside him, looking considerably lighter than you had earlier.
You nodded and Jack opened the door for you to climb in the truck before heading to his own side. The drive to their place took almost half an hour as they were on the other side of the hospital from you. The house was a neat, modest two story painted a rich navy blue with white trim.
He led the way up the short walk, your suitcase in hand. Inside, the entryway smelled like pine cleaner with a faint trace of last night’s dinner. You paused just inside the door as you inhaled deeply. Right. Jack was so used to his and Robby’s scents invading the space he didn’t even clock it anymore. It had to be a bit overwhelming for you. “Take your time,” he said, voice soft. “I’m going to get the boxes.”
You nodded and stepped to the side as you just continued to breathe. Once all of your meager belongings were inside, Jack commenced with the world’s shortest house tour. “Living room, kitchen—watch the knives, I keep them sharp. Down the hall is my master suite and a half bath. Laundry in the closet next to it. Robby’s suite is upstairs along with the guest bedroom—your room—and the guest bath. There’s laundry in the bathroom up there, too.”
You blinked. “You live downstairs?”
“Hard to do stairs after a shift sometimes,” he said pulling up his right pant leg so you could see his prosthesis. “This is easier. Plus, it keeps Robby’s and my personal space more separated.”
“Oh. Sorry, I didn’t know.”
He shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. Since you’ll be up there with him, you should be aware Robby’s a morning person, which is a damn crime. I’ll help you get everything upstairs in a second.”
You shook your head. “I can do it. You’ve done enough.”
He just stared at you. As if he’d let any omega, let alone you, haul their own shit up the stairs.
You sighed. “Fine, if you want to take the suitcase, that’d be great. I’m going to open the boxes down here and take the bedding up that way. It’s easier than hauling the box around.”
Since that made the most sense, he nodded and grabbed your suitcase and duffel ignoring you muttering behind him. You opened one of the boxes and grabbed an armful of pillows before following him up the stairs. He sat the suitcase down and opened the door to the guest room. The room was twice as big as the one in your apartment. It had white walls and a large sleigh bed that looked like it had never been used. A pair of nightstands framed the bed and a dresser sat along one wall.
“You can move stuff around if you want,” Jack said with a shrug.
You dropped the pillows in your arms on top of the bed as you looked around at the room and the plain walls. He suddenly worried this wasn’t good enough for you. “You can do anything you want with the space. Even paint it if you want to.” He started to tell you they could get your things out of storage but maybe it was too soon for that. He didn’t want to push you anymore than they already had.
“You hungry?” he asked.
You shook your head. “I’m good. Thank you, Jack.”
He nodded, then left you to settle, turning on some TV to unwind as he watched you go up and down the stairs, gathering up all the supplies for your nest. After your last trip, he moved over to stand at the bottom of the stairs. “Hey, there’s a linen closet in the hallway with extra blankets. Use anything you want. We hardly get in there.”
You didn’t respond, but after a moment he heard the click of the closet door. He smiled and went to break down the boxes and store them in the garage. The house didn’t feel different yet, but he knew it would. It would at least feel less empty most of the time and he found he couldn’t wait.
Three days in, Jack woke early afternoon and laid in bed, staring at the ceiling where you would be in your own room. Because you were always in your room no matter how much they told you to make yourself at home. It was then he realized what had him so restless, his teeth on edge. The sound and smell of the house. Quiet, clean and exactly the same as it had been before you moved in. Not a trace of that sweet omega scent he’d smelled in your apartment.
He made coffee, as he listened for sounds of movement. You were still on nights, so your schedule matched pretty close with his at the moment. He heard the laundry spinning upstairs. He poured his coffee and leaned against the counter as he sipped it, letting it burn all the way down and thought about the problem. They’d brought a stressed out, living, breathing omega into their house, and you didn’t leave a trace.
He found you in the upstairs hallway sitting on a milk crate surrounded by laundry baskets. You’d fold the clothes then put stuff in the correct basket, linens, Robby’s stuff, his, yours. He leaned against the wall at the top of the stairs, arms crossed. “You know you don’t have to do our laundry, right?”
You shrugged, not quite meeting his eyes. “I wanted to help. You guys work a lot.”
Jack grunted. “You work just as much as we do. You think you owe us something for letting you stay here. You don’t.”
“That’s easy for you to say,” you said, not unkindly.
“That’s not what I came up here to talk about.”
You tensed as if bracing for something.
“You’re using the hospital suppressants,” he said. It wasn’t a question as you’d just deny it and you’d be lying.
A pause. You blinked twice then sat the towel you were folding in your lap. “Yes.”
Jack tilted his head. “Why?”
You twisted the edges of the towel, winding it tight. “I didn’t want to bother you. Or Robby. It can’t be easy having some random omega in your house. I know you said it didn’t matter but you can’t possibly really want my scent everywhere.”
He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Sweetheart, you are not some ‘random omega’. You are our friend and we care about you. Regardless, it is not healthy for you to use that shit all the time.”
You frowned, skeptical.
“You ever read the label? There’s a reason they tell you to make sure to scrub your skin thoroughly after a shift. You’ve been wearing it all day since you moved in here.” You looked away embarrassed and Jack softened his voice a fraction. This was important, but he wasn’t mad at you. “Listen, the regular stuff’s not great for you but the medical-grade lotion we use at the hospital? That can leech into your scent glands. You keep using it like this, it could suppress you for real. Permanently.”
“Oh.” Your eyes went round and little scared.
He shrugged. “There’s a reason you can’t get that stuff outside of a medical setting.”
A long silence. Then, barely audible, “I’ll stop. Promise.”
“Good.” He nodded. “For what’s worth, the house feels weird without your scent in it. It’s making Robby and I irritable because we know your scent should be here and it’s not. It’ll be better for all of us.”
You smiled, small but genuine. “I get it. Thanks for just talking to me and not being an ass about it.”
He clenched his jaw, wanted to say something about the asshole that always made you afraid of his and Robby’s reactions. That made you always surprised when they were sweet or showed you the slightest bit of kindness. Instead, he gave you a nod and headed back downstairs. Both of you were off tonight and he wanted to get dinner started before you decided you needed to do it.
That evening when Robby came home, he paused just inside the front door, head tilted. He stood there for a second, hands loose at his sides before closing his eyes and inhaling deeply.
He opened his eyes and grinned as his gaze found Jack. “I can smell her. It’s faint but she’s there. Thank fuck. It was driving me crazy.”
Jack grunted. “She stole a bottle of the lotion from the hospital. Been using it since she got here.”
Robby’s eyes went wide and any trace of happiness fell from his face. “What the fuck? Why would she do that?”
“I already gave her the lecture. She won’t do it again. She was convinced we wouldn’t really want her scent everywhere regardless of what we said. That dick probably bitched about her stinking up his space or some shit like that.” His jaw clenched again. “She took a long shower, scrubbed her skin raw so at least she listened. I figure it’ll be a couple of days before her scent’s normal.”
Robby’s jaw was tight as well, but despite his obvious anger and annoyance, his whole posture had changed. His shoulders dropped, his breathing turned easy and that permanent line that creased his brow after a shift was gone. Just a trace of your scent had helped them both relax. Jack didn’t think you had any idea how much your presence would help them as much as they were helping you.
You seemed to be operating under the assumption this was a one-way arrangement. That you were just taking without giving. They’d have their hands full trying to get you to see the reality. You’d been trained that omegas were a bother, that alphas only tolerated them as necessary. They’d just have to show you that wasn’t the case as he had a feeling you wouldn’t listen to any arguments they made.
It was another week and half before you were all off at the same time again. It was early. Jack hadn’t been to bed and you were trying to stay awake as you were flipping to days again and needed to get your sleep flipped, which you usually did by staying up through both shifts then crashing. Robby came down the stairs, drying his hair after a shower. He couldn’t find his favorite hoodie anywhere. A vintage Steelers zip up he’d had since college. It was fraying at the sleeves and the yellow had faded to a color Jack called ‘piss yellow’. He really should retire it, but it was warm and soft.
He looked in the machines by Jack’s room before knocking on his open door. He was putting away the laundry you’d done during the night. “Hey,” Robby said. “You seen my Steeler’s hoodie anywhere? I thought it might have gotten mixed in with your laundry.”
Jack pursed his lips before shaking his head. “No, but I’m missing a green Army shirt.”
Robby frowned. “One could have been misplaced, but both?”
“Only one other person to ask,” Jack said, gesturing in the direction of your room.
Robby headed up the steps, Jack following behind. Robby knocked lightly on your door.
You opened it, looking between the alphas in surprise. They rarely sought you out together. “Yeah?” you asked, brows lifted, eyes wide.
He scratched the back of his neck. “Sorry to bother you, but we were just wondering if some of our clothes got mixed in with yours. I’m missing a hoodie, Jack’s missing an Army shirt.”
You flushed from the roots of your hair to the bottom of your neck. “Oh god. I’m sorry. I should have asked. I just…I couldn’t sleep and I thought having something of yours in my nest would help. It did, but I should have asked. They were just so soft and…” You continued to ramble as you moved over to your bed and came back carrying their clothes.
“Hey,” Robby said, voice soft. “It’s okay. You should have told us you weren’t sleeping well.” His heart warmed at the thought their scent had brought you comfort. That you wanted their aroma in your nest.
“I didn’t want to bother you.” You held out the items in question but neither of them moved to take them.
Jack nudged Robby aside and stripped off the shirt he was wearing before pressing it into your hands. “Keep it. Take this one, too.”
“Oh,” you said in surprise. “Thank you.”
Not to be outdone, Robby stripped his too before handing it over. “Take mine, too.” He was really going to miss that hoodie but it was a worthy sacrifice for your happiness.
You looked between the two men and something in you eased. Your shoulders dropped, your breathing slowed. “Thank you.”
“Anytime,” Robby said and meant it.
That night after Jack left for his shift, you and Robby went to the living room to watch a movie. Robby sat to one end of the couch, legs stretched out to rest on the ottoman in front of him. You settled in the spot next to him and Robby went very still, not wanting to do anything to startle you. He was honestly surprised you were this close to him willingly but he was fucking thrilled you were finally starting to get more comfortable with them.
You made it halfway through the movie before you lost the fight to stay awake, your head landing on his shoulder. He darted a glance at the clock. You’d stayed awake long enough so he let you sleep as he finished the movie, you curling closer to him as he did.
When the movie was over, he turned off the TV before rousing you. “Movie’s over, baby. Let’s go to bed.”
You hummed then stretched. “What time is it?”
“Bedtime,” he answered instead of giving you an actual answer. He didn’t want you deciding you needed to stay up later and forcing yourself. He steered you toward the stairs, staying behind you as you made your way up. His hands found your hips to steady you when you wobbled. He kept them there until he dropped you off at your door. When he turned back in his doorway, he found you looking after him, something in your eyes he couldn’t read.
Your cheeks flushed and you ducked your head. “Night, Robby.”
“You can stay with me if you want,” he offered before he could talk himself out of it.
Your whole face brightened. “You wouldn’t mind?”
He smiled and shook his head. “No. I wouldn’t mind at all. I think I’d like it truth be told.”
You nodded frantically. “Let me change and I’ll be right there.”
By the time you’d finished getting ready for bed and joined him in his room, he’d already climbed in his side and folded back the blankets for you on the other. You slid in and pulled the blankets up while he turned of his lamp. You laid on your side fidgeting and Robby’s lips twitched.
“You can snuggle, sweetheart. It’s no fun if you don’t snuggle.”
You rolled into his side with no hesitation and he held out his arm so you could curl up on his chest, your palm flat against his sternum. He wrapped you in his arms and breathed deeply, filling his lungs with your sweet aroma. You hummed in contentment and melted into him.
It wasn’t long before your breathing evened out. Robby expected to lie awake, brain running as it always did, but the feeling of you breathing beside him in the dark dragged him under.
When the alarm went off just before 6:00 am, he woke surprised to find himself completely well rested for once. You were still curled into his side, breathing deeply. He eased out from under you and tucked the covers around you while he got ready to go to work. You’d join him on his shift the next day.
When he finished getting ready and you were still sleeping, he contemplated a bit before sweeping you into his arms. He carried you down the stairs to Jack’s room, you stirring only slightly as he deposited you in the bed. He stepped back and grinned as he watched you nuzzle into Jack’s pillow. That’ll do. They’d get you used to being taken care of by two alphas in no time.
Jack was bone tired by the time he got home. The house was still quiet and he made his way to his bedroom before remembering Robby warned him you were sleeping in the bed. He turned the knob slow so it wouldn’t rattle and eased open the door.
You were there, curled under his heavy comforter, wrapped around one of his pillows. He chuckled and moved into the room, trying to be quiet. He went through his ritual in silence, removing his prosthesis and setting it beside the bed before using his crutches to head into the bathroom. His clothes went in the hamper and he took a shower, quick but long enough to make sure he’d scrubbed all the suppressants off along with any remnants from the shift.
When he finished, he pulled on a pair of loose shorts and a soft t-shirt before climbing in the bed. He kept expecting you to stir, but you didn’t. He tried to stay on his side but after half an hour of staring at the ceiling, he reached over and pulled you toward him. You went easily, settling back against his chest like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“Go back to sleep,” he muttered though you hadn’t really woken. He tucked his arm around you, buried his nose in your hair and inhaled. His mind, always a jumble of patients, codes and trauma went blank. He was always too wound up to sleep right after a shift but here, with you in his arms, he let go and drifted to sleep.
This is omegaverse related so please here me out… What about something different? What about…
A
Feral Omega?
I’m talking like, this omega isn’t your typical omega. This omega is downright dangerous, reports of Omega going feral but causes of harm to them due to some omega discrimination.
So what if, reader who is feral omega, is down right butchering enemies. And doesn’t hesitate to almost maul some alpha recruits if they want to mess with her..
Cw: omegaverse, feral!reader, violence, blood, weird pack dynamic, discrimination, protective behaviour, tell me if I missed any.
You were a ‘one-of-a-kind’ omega —spoken with utmost reverence by them. You were their strong and independent omega, whispered in crowded halls, mumbled in darkest nights, screamed in busy moments, and kissed to in warm and comfortable beds. You were anything but a strong and dedicated and reliable soldier, someone Ghost had grown to respect after a joint Op, then coaxed to rely on by the others when they saw how welcoming Ghost was and simply how skillful you were at your job.
You were small but spry, less bulky but flexible, weaker but resourceful. You were everything they sought for in an omega. You were so much alike Soap, yet molecularly different. Though it was every alpha’s dream of finding a soft and loving mate to provide and protect for, someone smaller and more fragile than their thick muscles and broad build, there was a thrill in being reminded that they weren’t always at the top, being grounded and brought back down from their high horses. Against all of traditional mating couples, your current age and time had demanded more equal partnering, a relationship where both parties stood on the same ground.
And Ghost and Price thrived on that, their employment demanded a level of independence from their mates and pack mates, the capability of standing on their own and manage grief and stress. That’s where Soap stood, an omega at it’s finest, strong and independent and emotionally knowledgeable, the glue to their pack, and Gaz, the stabiliser, the soft and gentle hand that reminded them of who they were.
Then you came bulldozing through their well-built dynamic: feral and wrathful, full of hate and anger for the world who had wronged you. When the military had rejected you for both your sex and gender, you’d worked up the ranks in the CIA with your blood, sweat and tears, starting from a fresh agent - a rookie - to an experienced one. You’d gotten so far that Laswell had eventually reach out to you, acknowledged by someone so powerful and partnered with The Ghost had gotten you the acknowledgment and respect you’d dreamed of.
It was a rough start with Ghost, but he learned to rely on you as much as you did him, you had formed a mutual understanding that only grew into fondness after meeting the rest of his pack. They were a functioning mix of weird and quirky: a leading alpha that was a big, soft bear, another alpha that was rough on the edge but caring, an overenergetic and fiery omega and a beta that represented everything you liked in one, calm, open-minded and smart. It was odd seeing you join them so often and continuously on Ops that didn’t need much of CIA intervention, but you all made it work.
You’d become a familiar face on base, a blunt and no-nonsense agent to new people, but cracked jokes and smiled with those you knew. Fiercely protective of your pack as much as they were with you. If Soap was a menace, then you were an omen, your deep frown and growling snarl, baring your teeth as a warning before you attacked. The world had taught you to bark and bite —and bite you did, a strong and dangerous one, leaving you bruised and roughed up, but your opponent gasping for life and battered.
Honestly, sometimes you were more trouble than it’s worth, but wouldn’t have it any other way.
thinking abt an omegaverse au when omega emma joins the pitt and alpha guard dog takes to her so easily because she's omega dana's mentee [she's dana's to look out for therefore she's his to look out for] he thinks he's treating emma like an extention of dana bordering on their pup but one of the other pitt staff members mentions something about courting rituals and how similarly guard dog behaves with dana and emma [bringing them food, protecting them, taking on the heavy lifting, classic guard dog stuff that he does for all the women of the pitt to some extent] but dana becomes slightly insecure because he's hands on with emma in a way he only is with her and dana thinks guard dog Likes emma [even though he could not be more in love with his wife] because emma's docile and fits better into the mould of a stereotypical omega and is much closer in age to guard dog
so at first she starts subtly trying to conform more with omega stereotypes -softer, more docile, more physically affectionate, ect - [especially in the workplace bc she's the biggest sweetheart at home] to try and please guard dog because that's what she thinks he wants [he doesn't he loves being bossed around by his wife + doing everything for her] but guard dog just think she's getting even sweeter on him and he's so excited!! his wife likes him!! but when that doesn't stop what she thinks is him sniffing around emma - he's been hanging around dana even more at work because she's being nicer to him and he laps up her attention like a starving animal - then she starts avoiding him and getting meaner/standoffish with him but it's only because she thinks he's losing interest in her! she's ony defending herself and she doesn't really mean it :[ then he's all miserable and aggressive because why is his wife being mean to him :[ but of course when dana starts avoiding him emma does by extention bc emma is training under dana so dana thinks the reason he's miserable is because he's not seeing emma
maybe it gets so bad she even banishes him to the guest room and he's so upset bc he doesn't know what he's done :[
everyone at the pitt is suffering by extention because guard dog is stinking up the ptmc with his awful scent and the tension between them is so thick you could cut it with a knife
it all explodes in a fight when maybe one of the pitt staff locks them in a supply cupboard after a shift in the parking lot when he's smiling and saying bye to emma and dana looks so mad and the staff just can't take it any more
anyways guard dog reassures her and is like '????' when she asks him if he'd rather be with emma because he's mated with dana??? his claiming mark on her neck is glaring back at him but she looks so angry??? he's literally obssessed with her??? and he's like why would i want anyone else when i have you? you're literally perfect for me i adore you with everything i have </3
guard dog who never even considered being near other omegas to be an issue because he was so locked in with dana it never crossed his mind to look at them with anything other than friendship and he's so hurt dana couldn't see that :[
but it just means he has to try extra hard to let her know he only thinks about her! cue dana + guard dog now looking like a mauled animals and smothered in each other's scent everytime they go into the pitt because everyone needs to know they're spoken for <3
damn i wrote this on my notes app i didn't realize how blocky the text would look </3

Dana Evans x guard dog! reader masterlist | expanding on the guard dog! reader universe | companion moodboard #1 | companion moodboard #2
Beginning notes: okay first off I'm SO SORRY that this took so long!! for some reason I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to start the fic off and I was in a bit of a rut because of it :/ but once I got that done it was smooth sailing from there, and hopefully it was worth the wait! <3 (also yes I intentionally chose a gif where dana is #crashingout because this is her inner self the entire time she felt like she may have been losing guard dog)
When Emma first joined The Pitt, it was a little overwhelming for her to be there. A new place with new people and new smells never made that sort of transition easy. But she didn't have to deal with it alone, because she had both Dana and you there to help her adjust.
With the charge nurse taking the newbie under her wing, mentoring her and showing her the ropes, you acted accordingly by doing the same. Anyone who Dana took care of and looked out for, you took care of and looked out for; that's just the way it went. Emma never had to worry about dealing with aggressive patients or judgmental alphas with you around, because you took care of them for her.
In fact, you were even more helpful and attentive with her than you were the other nurses. Maybe it was because of how young she was, maybe it was the fact that she was an omega, maybe it was due to Dana's orders to keep a close watch on her specifically (most likely, it was all three). At any rate, sailing was smooth for the first couple weeks, until-
"Aw, look at that. Guard dog's helping Emma with her patients," Frank mused out loud while scrubbing in for a mild operation set to take place. Being a father himself, it wasn't hard to pick up on the way that you'd seemed to take the pup in as your own.
"Yeah, I'm sure that's all that's going on," Yolanda scoffed at his words while pulling on a pair of surgical gloves.
He tilted his head off to the side at her words, visibly confused. "I… I don't follow," he admitted. "I mean, what's wrong with lending out a little help?"
"The problem-" she began with an aggravated eye roll, already tired of his idiocy "-is just how similar that is to courting rituals. I mean, c'mon. Bringing her food? Being overly protective? Carrying particularly heavy things for her? That's courtship behavior if I've ever seen it." She would know, because she always went out of her way to avoid doing these things so Trinity wouldn't be given any false hope about the aspect of their "relationship", if you could even call it that.
"But… Dr. Evans does that for everybody, especially the nurses," Frank insisted while following the other doctor towards the room where the operation would take place.
"Not like that. Wake up and smell the cleaning supplies, Langdon," Yolanda simply finished with an exasperated sigh as she entered the patient room, directing Robby with pointed questions about the patient's stats.
Not too far away stood Dana, who'd been making her rounds when she overheard the whole thing. It seemed crazy at first to think something like that: after all, Frank was right, you did help out everyone in the hospital. That's just the kind of person you were.
But then, that little seed of doubt began to plant inside her mind. You did always seem very eager to run errands for Emma, more so than with anybody besides the charge nurse herself. And Emma was younger than Dana, more in your age range; not to mention far better fitting of the stereotypical omega mold, what with her sweet and docile demeanor. Maybe if she started acting like that, you'd lose any and all interest in the new pup and turn your full attention back to her again.
So that's exactly what she did. Dana's attitude changed (especially at work) as she attempted to be softer, nicer, less stern, and more physically affectionate. She thought that maybe, just maybe, this would placate you, not even considering for a second the notion that you actually enjoyed her bossiness, that you loved it when she ordered you around. Regardless, you were none the wiser, simply viewing it as her being all lovey dovey, because why wouldn't you think that? She was your wife, and it made you thrilled to have all that extra affection being thrown your way.
Dana assumed that it was working when you responded accordingly, being touchier than usual and hanging around her a lot more at work. Until she noticed you were still being super helpful to Emma, at which point her previously sweet attitude instantly curdled like a glass of old milk. This caused her to then pull away from you, revoking any and all of the bunches of love that'd previously been thrown your way and ignoring your pitiful nature that came from it like an owner who'd tuned out the sound of their dog scratching on the backdoor, begging to be let back inside.
You were absolutely crushed. What had you done that'd been so wrong? You wracked your brain, trying to figure it out so you could make it up to her, but no such luck. Even grilling the other nurses was fruitless, because they also didn't have a clue about the reasoning for your wife's sudden strange behavior.
Her sour and standoffish mood caused you to be grouchier as a result. She was under the impression that you didn't love her the same anymore, and you still had no idea about any of this. You didn't understand why she was avoiding you, or why she was being so mean.
Of course, with her spending less time around you at the hospital, Emma followed suit since she was being trained by her. The younger nurse also wasn't aware of what Charge Nurse Evans was so mad at Balto for, but she figured it'd be best just to stay out of it (which was easier said than done, considering she was smack dab in the middle without even realizing).
With you acting so miserable from her pulling away, naturally Dana connected it to the lack of seeing the other nurse instead of what it actually was. She thought you were upset that she was running off a new potential mate, but really you were just feeling lonely over your actual mate not seeming to want you around anymore. And this loneliness got even worse when one night after your shift she told you to sleep in the guest room instead, giving you the excuse of "wanting some space", which had never happened before.
Meanwhile, everyone else who worked with you had been suffering for just as long by extension. No one liked being in the warzone caused by an angry charge nurse and a grumpy doctor, especially not with the smell. Your scent had gotten so bad, they had to wear facemasks just to be around you. The tension in the air could've been cut with a knife and served on a platter, it was so thick.
It all came to a head one night when you were telling Emma goodbye as she was leaving from work, walking her out to where her car was in the parking lot and giving her a farewell hug. That was one of the first times you'd had a genuine smile since the whole thing started, the cool night air and short chat had with your pup doing wonders to clear your mind of everything that'd been going on.
Unfortunately, this brief moment of bliss didn't last, your inner serenity and peace being shattered the moment you walked back in to the ER to find a very angry Dana glaring at you over her glasses as though she were trying to melt you with sheer willpower alone. The tablet in her head was being gripped so tightly, Donnie had to take it away for fear that she'd break it. Nobody had wanted to point out the obvious, too scared of the potential fallout from doing so, but enough was enough.
"Alright, I think I can speak for everyone here when I say we're all sick and tired of this fighting nonsense," the voice of Jack spoke up as he appeared, gesturing between the two of you while speaking in a calm yet firm manner. "You-" he pointed to Dana "-have been way meaner lately, and you-" his finger changed directions towards you "well, your attitude just stinks. Literally. And since neither one of you seems to want to initiate any conversation yourselves-"
The ER in all of its entirety watched in pure awe as he somehow managed to herd both you and Dana into a nearby supply closet, unceremoniously shoving you both in and sticking a chair outside under the handle of the shut door to keep you from leaving. "You aren't going anywhere until you sit down and figure things out," his muffled voice echoed through the door. "So I suggest you start talking."
It was quiet at first, both of you far too stubborn to want to say anything right away. About ten minutes went by before Jack spoke up again. "I meant what I said earlier. I'm not letting either of you out until you decide to talk."
A deep and heavy sigh escaped you at that, your hands moving up to drag down your face in exhausted resignation. "Well. This is just peachy," you muttered to yourself, daring to stealing a glance at Dana where she stood across from you with her arms defensively resting over her chest. Even with her being so mad, there was no denying she was still plenty hot.
"Do you want to be with Emma instead of me?" She suddenly demanded, voice sharp as she finally blurted out that one simple question she'd been dying to ask for far too long.
The look on your face was nothing short of bewildered, and it was obvious just how taken aback you were by it. "I- what?"
"I said-" she repeated with an irritated huff, already beginning to lose her patience with you as a result of keeping her feelings bottled up for so long "-do you want to be with her instead of me? Would you rather be with Emma?"
You didn't answer, too dumbfounded by the question. This had to be a joke, right? She was kidding, she had to be. There's no way she honestly thought that you wanted anyone else but her. I mean, you were married, for God's sake. You were mated with one another. Your claiming mark was literally stamped on the side of her neck like a proud token of love.
But when you met her gaze, you could see the swirling of emotions in her eyes, letting you know that yes, she was being serious. And it wasn't just anger that you saw there, but also hurt. Fear. Insecurity. As though she was deeply worried of rejection, despite everything you assumed had been proof to the contrary of that.
And that's when it finally, finally dawned on you. She was so upset because all this time, she thought you'd been falling in love with someone else. It was the only thing that made sense, and once you realized it you were kicking yourself for not figuring it out sooner.
Were you a little wounded by the notion of her thinking that you didn't love her that much? Absolutely, you were. Especially when you thought it'd been glaringly obvious just how much you were obsessed with her, how much you adored and worshiped her, how you'd do anything for her if she'd only ask you to.
But since it wasn't, now was your time to really prove it to her, once and for all. "I love you," came your first statement, getting right to the point with it as you began to take a few tentative steps forward. "I don't care about anyone else, certainly not like that. Why would I, when I'm already mated with and married to the most gorgeous and incredible woman around?"
Dana's previously hardened demeanor started to melt, washing away like sand on the beach as you poured your heart out to her. She allowed you to uncross her arms and gently tug her closer, your hands moving to rest on her side as you made direct eye contact.
"You're perfect for me in a way that no one else ever could be," you murmured in a low and soothing voice, your thumbs rubbing tender circles over her scrubs as you spoke. "Why would I ever want to give that up? I don't need them, because I've got you."
Her hazel eyes had welled up while listening to your short speech, starting to glisten with emotion at your words. Damn you. Damn you for making her feel like that, all bungled up when she shouldn't be.
"Y'know, that's all I ever wanted to hear from you," she somehow managed to choke out before her lips met yours in a tender embrace, her arms snaking around your neck as the two of you went from repelling magnets to perfectly fitting puzzle pieces once more.
From then on, there was certainly no question about who either one of you belonged to, or if you were truly in love. That was answered by the mere sight and smell of you alone, both of you covered in marks and smothered in each other's scent anytime you showed up at work after that.
The ER resumed its typical chaotic yet (mostly) manageable functions, everything going back to the way it was before the simmering tension and silent anger. Dana and her guard dog were reunited; all was right with the world. And as for Emma, she was just delighted to have her surrogate parents together again, this time for good.
End notes: nooo yoyo don't accidentally jeopardize the power couple of the century with your mindless gossip and snark when er ken's just trying to point out a wholesome moment haha you're so sexy

crawling out of my nest after…four months to write pt 2 of the scent post
scents and pheromones
pt. 1: physiology and function
pt. 2: scent messages
along with reproductive cycles and mating bonds, a heightened sense for interpreting scents and pheromones is a pillar of the omegaverse. this series uses language that describes scents in a way we can understand, but the effort to describe scents is in reality much like the effort to describe color to someone who may never have seen it. scents are intangible, and the descriptors used in this series are abstractions and metaphors rather than direct concrete descriptions.
review
to briefly summarize the first entry in this series, humans have scent glands present all over the body, with higher concentrations in certain areas (e.g. the palms, neck, and groin, among others). the scent carries pheromones which are interpreted by the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and decoded as basic information about approximate age, dynamic and phenotypic sexes, mating status, and pack health.
individual scent
individual scents function exactly as they sound. they are unique markers that help distinguish one person from another. they are the core of a person’s whole scent, and they contextualize all the sensations and underpinnings that carry the broader information about age, sex, etc. these scents are most frequently described with comprehensible reference points: honeysuckle, burning wood, vanilla. there are dynamic sex stereotypes—dark and earthy for alphas; light and floral for betas; warm and soft for omegas. in reality, individual scent is not influenced by a person’s dynamic sex. an alpha is just as likely to smell like chocolate cupcakes as they are to smell like petrichor or citrus.
what does dynamic sex smell like?
this is difficult to describe. dynamic sex can be described almost as a sensation more than a scent, the way that spice and sourness are sensations that can be carried by flavors without imparting flavor on their own. with that in mind, consider the following descriptions.
alpha: heavy, blunt, magnetic
beta: electric, sharp, vibrant
omega: bright, round, slow
the sensation of a dynamic sex underpins an individual’s scent. a warm, woodsy scent might be underpinned with vibrance, which would communicate that it likely belongs to a beta.
the scent of age
it may be more accurate to say that scent carries an approximation of an individual’s life stage. upon birth, infants of all dynamic sexes carry a primarily watery, milky, or powdery scent underpinned by the scent of the parent who carried them. the older a child becomes, the more their baby scent gives way to their individual scent. by five or six years old, a child may carry a watery floral scent.
at the onset of the first soft cycle, the dynamic scent sensation begins to emerge. here, a pup may have a bright, powdery, honeyed scent. the presence of the first two sensations communicates that (1) the pup is likely an omega, (2) the pup is young, and (3) the brightness and powdery scent combined mean that the pup likely has not reached their first hard cycle.
the closer a pup becomes to reaching their hard cycle, the more their pup scent fades. a strongly milky scent combined with the dynamic scent indicates that a pup is very near to their first soft cycle, while a scent that is strongly individual with only traces of milkiness suggests that the individual is approaching their hard cycle.
mating status and pack health
this information is strongly inference-based, as mating only slightly changes an individual’s scent and pack health does not directly affect it at all. bite-bonded mates’ scents will carry traces of their mates’ individual scents. on their own, those scents are not enough to communicate who someone is mated to, how strong the relationship is, or any information about their mate’s sex. they only communicate that a mate exists. more detailed understanding of both mate and pack health comes form scent marking.
in healthy packs, members are regularly marked with each other’s scent, creating a ‘pack scent’ shared by all members. bite-bonded mates’ scents tend to appear stronger or more intrinsic to their mates because they are emphasized by the ‘mate’ scent marker the bite imparts.
most people infer from a person’s lack of pack scent that their pack is unhealthy or distant, or that they have been shunned. pack scents that are tinged with anger, frustration, or other strong emotions aid in inferences drawn on relationship health.
emotional scents
much like dynamic sex, emotions add a sort of sensation or undertone to a person’s scent. in general, emotions like contentment, joy, and relaxation tend to add warmth, brightness, or softness to a person’s scent; while emotions like sadness, loneliness, or frustration tend to darken, sour, or muddy it. because emotions are complex, however, it would be dishonest to say that ‘joy brightens the scent,’ for example.
there are some universal markers—fear and pain are distinct and consistent scents that can be identified by infants in their first month of life. but while broad emotional strokes can be inferred by near strangers, more nuanced and complex reading of a scent’s emotion requires familiarity. just as you may be able to distinguish your partner’s polite laugh, surprised laugh, and delighted laugh easily, close relations tend to have an easier time distinguishing the scents of frustrated determination, frustrated confusion, and frustrated resignation.
how can any of that information be decoded?
scents carry massive amounts of information that the brain decodes in fractions of a second, providing understanding. to describe how that information might be decoded, consider music.
most people can determine whether a singular note was played by a stringed instrument, a keyboard instrument, or a wind instrument. a skilled violinist may be able to determine whether that note came from a violin, viola, cello, or bass due to their familiarity with and repeated exposure to those instruments.
musicians hearing a singular phrase can determine which mode and key is being played, and they may be able to describe oft-used chord progressions in that mode or genre.
repeated exposure to a stimulus, when that stimulus is important, creates ease in its decoding. while newborns’ vision is blurry and limited in its color perception, a seeing adult parses a myriad of visual stimulus each second, creates connections, and draws inferences, all without conscious thought. we can pick out a close relation’s voice in a crowd because we know that voice intimately. parsing and decoding scents functions much the same way.
