Every day is a perfect day.

He wakes up with her in his arms, a faceful of red hair, smooth skin under his fingertips. For a blissful, quiet moment, everything is red, red like her hair, red like the moment right before the sun slips below the horizon on a perfect night, red like a fire in the fireplace, warm down to his bones, defrosting some of his winter. She fits perfectly against him like a puzzle piece, their jagged edges smoothing out into a beautiful picture, a picture of fall leaves and crisp air, of cool mornings and warm afternoons, right before the world turns icy again.

Excerpt: 

Ma sniffles again, a little less concealed this time, and wipes her eyes. “You get home safe to me, James Buchanan,” she says sternly. “Write as often as you can.” 

“I will,” he tells her. “I’m gonna be just fine, ma, don’t worry.” 

It’s the same lie he’s been repeating since he got his draft card in the mail all those weeks ago, so rehearsed at this point he doesn’t have to think about the words before saying them, and after every repetition it feels more and more like a falsehood. Judging by the sour look on his pa’s face, he’s not the only one thinking it.
