Honey laundering
Heard about this on the BBC's Food Programme Podcast - the US and UK are experiencing Honey Laundering on a massive scale. Yes, Honey laundering.
A third or more of all the honey consumed in the U.S. is likely to have been smuggled in from China and may be tainted with illegal antibiotics and heavy metals. (source)
Some of this isn't even real bee spit, just flavored synthetic syrup. It first got picked up when someone bought some honey from a farmer's market and it tasted awful. When it was traced back it became apparent that it had been shipped into the US, resold and relabeled as local honey, and as being all the good things you get from farmers' markets. Honey laundered.
The BBC's program me (here) also trace the issues of potential GM contamination of organic honey etc.
Very grateful I have my local supplier that I can trust
