As a student who has been nurtured by a single sex education for the past 10 years and a historically black institution for the past 3, transferring to a predominately white institution and studying within a predominately male program has been difficult to say the least. I am 1 of 64 Black Women in the College of Engineering which houses a little over 9,000 students. It is emotionally exhausting trying to learn in a space that is infected with systematic oppression. It is mentally exhausting trying to learn in a space that was not intended to teach me. It is such a stark contrast going from an environment where I was empowered and encouraged to excel, to a competitive environment where I am expected to fail. Every day I battle racial and gender inequality, as if Mechanical Engineering is not already a battle within itself. As exhausting as it is, I will not quit. I will not quit because I know the power that I possess and it is threatening to the systematic oppression that is in place. To the Black Students of Mizzou, you must not quit either. You have power that is intimidating and threatening to the system that racist individuals have fought 400 years to keep in place. The hatred and blatant disrespect is a survival defense tactic; a lousy and ineffective one at that, but we are not afraid. We deserve to be here and we will thrive here. We owe it to the future generation just as much as we owe it to our ancestors whose blood built these schools. To the black students at Mizzou, I stand with you in solidarity. #ConcernedStudent1950 #BBUM #BlackOnCampus #WeAreHereToStay (at University of Michigan)

Black College Students Launch Artistic Social Media Campaigns About Race
Instead of growing Afros, staging riots or organizing sit-ins, this generation of protesters are crafting witty digital projects to rally themselves. Back in November, several black students at the University of Michigan launched a social media campaign on Twitter, using the hashtag #BBUM, an acronym for “being black at the University of Michigan,” to describe their unique and often…
