Censorship's bottom line is this: if the novel 'Christine' offends me, I don't want just to make sure it's kept from my kid; I want to make sure it's kept from your kid, as well, and all the kids. This bit of intellectual arrogance, undemocratic and as old as time, is best expressed this way: 'If it's bad for me and my family, it's bad for everyone's family.'

Banned Book Showcase:  Junie B. Jones

Discovering this one on the list made me snicker a little, I'm not gonna lie.  It's another that never reached the Top 10 (it was number 71), but reasons for challenging the antics of Barbara Park's precocious kindergartener include "encouraging disobedience" and "not being a good role model." 

Apparently, children should only read about characters who are perfect little angels, instead of, you know, realistic.

Censorship is the suppression of ideas and information that certain persons - individuals, groups, or government officials - find objectionable or dangerous.  Censors pressure public institutions, like libraries, to suppress and remove information from public access, so that no one else has the chance to read or view the material and make up their own minds about it.  The censor wants to prejudge materials for everyone.

Intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction.  It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through with any and all sides of a question, cause or movement may be explored.
