I am wary of photos where women/girls are shown in parts, or faceless. Of course, it depends on how the photography is done, who does it, the context, the overall feel, etc. Like, a woman taking a picture of her outfit without her head/face in the frame is different from a sexualized, lifeless-looking woman photographed for an ad, you know? But the reduction of women to parts - like in "hipster" pictures (like they're not just hipster pictures and we shouldn't act like it's only one type of photography/group of people that does this, but I think it's easier for people to recognize what I'm talking about if I label it like this), the kind that make the rounds on tumblr - why is a de-personalized (is this even the right word?) woman appealing? Can we even call her a woman, maybe she's only a child. But waif-like and easily bruiseable is just sooo appealing amirite. Is it because it's easier to view a girl or woman as one part or the other, rather than to see her as whole? Because it is so difficult to view a woman as a whole person, who might be strong (or who might not be, but lbr 'who might not be' is what's propagated in ~hipster~ images on tumblr), who has a face and an identity, and who is MORE than just for viewing in parts?
