Bennett wasn’t the grudge-holding type. He didn’t have the energy or the heart to tend to anything long. It was the only reason he didn’t turn and walk the other way when he spotted Asher. Instead, he headed toward the heat, knowing that he was likely to get burned if he got too close. It didn’t matter though; she was a friend and friends didn’t walk away when things got rough. “I didn’t expect to see you here,” he admitted quietly, a little annoyed with how things had ended at the hospital. “I don’t expect you to say two words to me, but I wanted to see how you were feeling and if I don’t get the right to know that, then I understand.” He’d taken up for her all that he could, even to the point of getting sent home himself, but it still didn’t feel like enough. “I’m sorry, Ash. For everything.”
