#BCAF2015 Spotlight: North Coast

North Coast is an NYC-based hip hop improv juggernaut.

We rapped with cast member Douglas Widick about what’s next for North Coast, including their upcoming visit to #BCAF2015!

1) North Coast is known for blurring the lines between comedy show and concert. Do your members come from musical backgrounds?

Many members of North Coast come from a musical background, and a few members of our group are multi-instrumentalists. Our beat-boxer, Kaila Mullady, is the current beatbox world champion (clip below), and brings some serious street credit from the music world with her. I like to believe that in another dimension we are in a jam band and wearing tie-dye headbands together, playing a song called "electric fish."

2) You guys also produced an album last year and your music videos are hilarious! What’s next for North Coast?

We want to expand our digital video presence, while also increasing our bookings at colleges. We are showcasing at NACA, and hope to expand our reach to as many audiences as possible. We're currently looking into a Florida tour, and possibly heading to Edinburgh fringe next year.

3) If North Coast could invite any hip hop artist as a special guest, who would it be and why?

We really want to do a show with Lin-Manuel Miranda, since he embodies so many of the things North Coast tries to create in our shows. His shows contain incredible rapping while also being touching and hilarious, and I think he'd be the perfect candidate for a North Coast member.

4) What can students expect from your highly anticipated workshop on Saturday, September 12th?

Be prepared to take those grandma raps and chain together as many syllables as possible!  Your jaw will be on the floor, and your brain will be in the heavens, but at the end of the workshop, you will be a better freestyler. We welcome all levels of experience, in what is a very safe and welcoming environment to learn a skill that is very scary for some but fun for all.

Exciting Announcements: New Face, New Space

Greetings from 40 Prospect! As we ramp up for #BCAF2015 (in less than a month!), Mike and I are delighted to announce two awesome pieces of news:

We’d like to extend an official welcome to Liz Jukovsky, our new Digital Marketing and Social Media Manager. You may know Liz from Grove, one of Harold Night’s newest teams, but Liz has also been an intern at IB since April. Prior to her return to Cambridge, Liz was studying improv at Second City in Toronto, where she also managed social media and web content for several organizations. We’re very excited to have Liz on board in the new capacity and know that she’ll crush it.

Even more exciting news: As many of you know, we are currently maxed out for classroom and rehearsal space at our theater. The demand is there for more classes and although there will never be enough rehearsal space, we’re thrilled to announce that we just signed a lease on a new rehearsal/class space right in the heart of Central Square.

About a minute away from the theater, this new flex space will allow us to offer more classes, workshops and rehearsal space ImprovBoston. We are also thrilled to explore ways to make this space available for indie teams and comedy projects throughout the greater Boston arts community. We’re working out the final details now as we look forward to supporting the growing comedy scene with some greatly needed rehearsal and meet-up resources.

We had an awesome “soft open” of the space last night with GoreFest auditions. We’ll be making cosmetic upgrades for the rest of August so we’re ready to open it up for full time use in September. Special thanks to Scott Istvan for working with us to find a space that could serve the community. Stay tuned for more news on this great new resource.
