Bearing edges?

Combined with the type of wood, the bearing edge and amount of plies are resonsible for the sound, projection, tone and volume of the shell.

Bearing edges are difficult to understand, there are different ways of measuring and creating bearing edges with horizontal and vertical cutting. The bearing edge can have a big impact on the tone of a shell as it changes how much of the shells thickness is in contact with the head. More contact means less resonance but warmer tones, less contact means more resonance but higher frequencies etc.

The most common types of bearing edge are 45 degree, 30 degree and 60 degree.

45 egree bearing edges are said to sound sharper and offer more attack, 30 degree edges are said to to offer a rounder, more full and warm sound and 60 degree bearing edges are said to empahsise the qualities of a 30 degree bearing edge. Until you try different shells with different bearing edges you won't know which you prefer as the type of wood, bearing edge, head and shell thickness all work together to change and create varying tones.
