Summary: Legoshi is set up to meet a possible new friend. When they don't arrive after several minutes, our wolf begins to lose hope; until our honey obsessed reader make a most interesting appearance.
Being a wolf in the world that I was born in could be cruel at times. I was a carnivore by nature, and by social standards, I was a danger to society. I couldn't control that people stare at me when I pass. I couldn't do anything when smaller herbivores ducked behind walls just to get away from me.
It's not as if I blamed them, really. Hell, if I were in their shoes, I probably would have been twice as nervous. Doesn't make it fun, though.
Jack stated that I needed to make a new friend. He thought that it would help me feel less isolated in the world. I got his point, but really, who would willingly be friends with a nervous wimpy wolf?
Apparently, he had set someone up to meet me. Someone he had met at the school—a honey badger. I was told to look out for black and blonde fur, but in the muddle of different scales and feathers, how could I distinguish one pelt from another?
I sighed hopelessly, hunching over the table with the sandwich I had ordered. I grabbed two since if this person did decide to show up, I could offer them something. But it seemed that no one was going to arrive. Several minutes pass, people came and went from the cafeteria, and I was left drumming my claws against my knee in nerves.
I had given up, stretching myself out and standing up when my ears picked up a voice at the counter.
"None? What do you mean there is none left? I thought you just restocked."
Naturally, I took a peek at the area. I was facing the back of slick yellow fur that barely came up to hips height. Black and brown fur…
"No Y/n," The counter woman said exasperated, scratching the feathers across her head, "I said that there was none for you. You can't just take all the honey sandwiches, there are herbivores who need them just as much as you. Why don't you try something else for a change? We can get you an omelette if you're hungry."
That was them. The honey badger! I was stuck in that spot, just staring in shock for several seconds, not knowing quite what to do.
"I…No, but thank you for asking anyways. I'm just gonna grab the milk and be on my way." And just like that, they were gone before I could even move my legs to speak to them.
I twisted and turned around, trying to relocate the tiny creature that I had just previously seen. How could they have possibly escaped that quickly?!
I was able to calm myself down enough to pick up their scent. It was faint, and I had a lot of adrenaline, but I managed to track it down to the outside area, where the seniors go for a break.
Strange, my heart was racing, and I was not quite sure why. Maybe because I excited to meet this badger? I'm not quite sure why I was so jittery, but it wasn't necessary. I had set to track the badger down. I stalked around the trees, eventually coming to the back of the school area.
They were standing in front of a large oak tree that dwarfed the small mammal. This was bizarre behaviour to me, as Y/n apprehensively glimpsed around as if worried that they would be caught. But caught doing what?
The next thing I knew, they had gripped their claws into the tree trunk and started climbing. I was surprised, to say the least, that a tiny creature could scale a tree so quickly.
It was clear what their intentions were once I looked up and saw a bee's hive nestled between the branches. They outreached a clawed hand towards the nest and swiped at it, missing by mere inches. What they had done next caused my eyes to widen in shock.
Without any warning, question or second thought, the badger had launched themselves at the hive, wrapping their arms around it as they fell towards the ground.
I had attempted to catch them in instinct, but they had already landed before I could react.
The hive was shattered unceremoniously across the pavement, and the badger groaned in pain as they pushed themselves up. You would expect that a fall from that height would have caused extreme agony even to a more giant creature. However, it seemed that this honey badger had only sustained bruises and scrapes instead of broken bones.
Upon making eyes with the crash-landed hive, a joy-filled grin spreads across their face. They hadn't seemed to notice me as they began clawing away at the destroyed remains, pulling the honey to their lips messily.
I stood for a while, not quite sure what to say in this kind of situation. Do I say hello? Do I introduce myself? Should I turn in leave? Is this an inappropriate time to start a conversation? Is this even the correct honey badger?!
Standing there, muddled in my own thoughts, I hadn't even realised that they were looking straight at me right now. Black eyes blew wide, full chubbed mouth dripping with honey; they looked at me like Louis in headlights.
"Hehe, hi…" Their laugh was nervous, almost as nervous as I was right now. "How long were you, um…standing there for?"
It had become aware to me that it was now my social cue to reply. Oh god, what do I do?!
"Um, I…I was um, walki-walking by." I lied through chattering teeth, mentally kicking myself for not just telling the truth in the first place. I guess I got to stick with this now.
There was an awkward silence brewing amongst us. Fighting against every fibre in my wolf body, I was able to gather the nerves to speak again.
"Are you…Are you Jack's friend?"
That word seemed to have struck something as their eyes began to glow in realisation.
"Yeah, Jack!" they replied confidently, standing up and wiping their stained honey paw against the school uniform. "The golden retriever dude, right? We go to the same design class."
I felt relieved that we could start on one common thing that we knew about—good ole jack.
"Are you…Sorry if this is inappropriate to ask, but is you're name Legoshi?"
Oh god, she knows my name; what do I do? This was my primary thought process after that question until I finally responded, "Um, yeah! Yeah that's me. I was…Actually supposed to meet up with a honey badger today… And you were the one that matched his description so…."
They weren't so thrilled with that answer as their eyes blown wide with horror.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry! I forgot that we had to meet up. I-I was just really hungry and, and I couldn't get what I wanted to eat and, um, I – I just got so distracted and I-"
"It's perfectly fine." I managed to interrupt before they spun themselves into a nervous breakdown. I have never met a creature that could have possibly been more nervous than me. Made me feel a lot better, knowing I wasn't the only one new to this whole friends thing.
"I-I know this is a bit late, but do you think we could start over?" They asked sheepishly, scratching their head.
They repeat the word 'cool' several times before turning their back to me. I was somewhat confused as to what they were doing.
Within a second, they spun back to face me, a smile on their face and this façade of a first meeting.
"Hi! Nice to meet you, my name is Y/n-" They outstretched their paw up at me, pretending like this was the first time we had spoken - "What's you're name?"
I was caught off guard by the sudden charade, but I would be lying if I said it wasn't kind of funny.
"I'm Legoshi, um, second year student." I shook their hand, noticing how small it fit and yet how strong and heavy it felt in my palm. They were one strong badger.
"Since this is our, um, first time meeting, would you like to go get lunch with me? I have a free period so I'm good for the rest of the day."
"That would be wonderful." They smiled up at me, and for once, I wasn't so nervous anymore.
I guess you were right, Jack. They do seem like a great friend.
