Here’s a dog tip for people who don’t like dogs and/or don’t want them to jump on you: you need to turn your body and speak to them like dogs! Say you are at your friends house, their dog hasn’t been expected Not to jump on people (or hasn’t been held accountable for it) so they jump on everyone to get their attention. This is reinforced by pets but also if you use your hands to create space, facing straight on and looking and talking at the dog You are probably also reinforcing this, the dog wants your attention and has in their mind successfully gotten it
BUT if you instead keep walking on without looking at the dog, turn your body sideways or even all the way around so your back is to them you send a very clear doggy message “No thanks”
Now, this will confuse the dog, they’ve always gotten attention for jumping, so you will see what we call in the biz an “extinction burst”, which is basically just the dog saying ok but if try Harder I will get what I want. It is crucial you do not give in! Do not yell at the dog or turn to face them or use your hands to create space. If you really want to create space (GENTLY) use your hips (or shoulders if they can get That high on you) to push them aside. Don’t look at them. Go sit down, talk to your friend like the most annoying dog in the world isn’t annoying you so bad rn.
Later, when the dog settles down THEN you can give pats (or continue to ignore if thts what ud like!). If they get excited and start jumping again once again the protocol is to Ignore. If you can get your friend on board with this it’ll get easier every visit, if you can’t,, it may take the dog like 5 min every visit to remember “oh yeah this person doesn’t like when I do that” but you will eventually see better boundaries! This I swear
Ok that’s all
