“Oh, I’d like to sleep in ‘till two on a Sunday, And listen to the bluebirds sigh, Get soaked in the rain, and smile through the pain, Slow dance under stormy skies...” ~ Love Like The Movies (Laufey)
Samuel Best is a horror novelist who lives a reclusive life and rarely mingles with the public. When he accepts the offer from a small bookstore to stop in for a limited book-signing event, one of the bookstore’s workers is honored to meet one of her favorite authors. An aspiring writer herself, Rose goes for broke and asks to study under him. Amazingly, he agrees.

💢 Write about a moment of conflict of argument between you and your villain F/O. (for the beast from OTGW)
Villain f/o writing prompts
"No, absolutely not, you do not get to turn Giri into a tree!"
"And why not?" The Beast replied, tilting his head to one side. "It's not as though it would be killing him. He's already dead."
"Already dead? He's not dead!" Rose snapped back. "He was, once, but so were you! And a bunch of other people here. He's alive now, and I care about him!"
"But you also care about me, right?" Beast pressured her.
"Of course I do," she replied with a sigh. "But I know you as well. I know you don't really need Edelwood oil as long as there's something else your soul can burn, and it's well taken care of in the fireplace. Besides, if you really want to do your thing, there's other places you can do that! I don't care if you're menacing the people of the Unknown or something. Just leave the other people I love out of your hunting."
Beast chuckled. "You know I can't make that promise," he replied, almost teasingly. "You should know that you're the only one I grant safe passage through my forest to. If you want to keep the others safe from me, my love, keep them indoors."
"Sometimes I wonder why I let you haunt this area," muttered Rose, shaking her head.
"Because you care for me too much to extinguish my soul," the Beast said. "Don't tell me you didn't realize what you were getting into when you took a liking to me."
"I should have considered it," Rose said. "Love makes fools of us all, I guess. And that includes you, since I've been an easy meal since day one."
The Beast laughed. "Just because I haven't done it yet doesn't mean I never will..."
Beast can sustain his soul on anything that burns, but it's only edelwood oil that really properly nourishes him. He also has no sense of taste so he couldn't tell you what the treeified souls of people taste like.
He sings to lure victims, yes, but he also genuinely enjoys singing so often times he'll just sing to himself for no reason besides just pure enjoyment.
He's essentially viewed by the people of the Unknown as what the devil is to real world mythology, but he isn't literally the devil in the sense that people know of it. He doesn't rule over a hell-like realm or exist to punish people, and he's not a fallen angel. It would be more accurate to consider him a manifestation of the natural forces of death and decay. He isn't truly evil, as he's an ancient natural entity that exists beyond human morality. That being said, he does understand the concept of mischief and "being a jerk" and he'll engage in both for his own entertainment and to get back at those who annoy him.
His branches are not barren and they grow white oak blossoms in the spring and leaves in the summer. In the fall, they turn orange and red and yellow and gradually fall off until you get the barren antler-like branches of his winter form. He has no leaves in the series because his only appearances were in late autumn and winter, he'd already lost all his leaves by then.
His body is completely made of wood, and is also hollow. This is pretty much the reason he has to keep his soul outside of his body, since if he tried to put it back, he'd burn himself to cinders. Still no clue how he got that way in the first place but I think knowing would ruin the mystique.
He's cloaked in a perpetual shadow that can only be pierced by the light of his own soul. If he walks out into bright sunlight, he'll still look like a shadow monster.
He likes to watch the denizens of the Unknown celebrate during their various festivals and sometimes can be heard singing along from his place among the trees. Sometimes this scares the people into hiding, which always saddens him a bit because it means the celebration is over.
He's functionally immortal and while extinguishing his soul will put him in the ground, he can be revived if the lantern is lit again. His physical body can regenerate from damage so long as his soul is fed and is very difficult to cut even with an axe. He also feels no pain unless his soul is affected.
Can I get The Beast for the acrostic ask game please? 👀
Acrostics f/o asks
B - Before - Before you decided to make them your f/o, what did you think of them/their source?
Over the Garden Wall came out when I was 14. And I immediately fell in love with it. I excitedly waited for every new episode and watched every one when it premiered. The ending left me ROCKED and even then I knew it was something special compared to a lot of other stuff I'd seen. It followed me all through that fall and winter, always in my mind. I actually made a drawing of Beast (who I know I was totally crushing on even then, but back then I didn't know about selfshipping) purely from memory during a girl scout camping trip that same year. I still have it laminated because it's one of the few pieces I did during that time of my life that I'm still proud of. It helps that Beast is just a silhouette so he's simpler to draw than some of the other characters I love, but I still think I did a pretty good job on it for 14.
E - Emotion - Is your f/o open with their feelings or do they keep them close to their chest?
Beast is a manipulation extraordinaire. This man is almost NEVER telling you the whole truth, so you can bet he's the same way with his feelings. I don't even think I can really tell sometimes.
A - Art - Do they draw or paint? What about any other kind of art? What's their favorite style/subject/another artist who inspires them?
I think the only art Beast actually engages in himself is music. He sings as well as seemingly writes his own lyrics and melodies to perform. However I think he does have a pretty significant interest in visual art, especially the kind that inspired the look of OtGW...but also classic art that's very dark in tone. This is a guy who would make a pleasant comment on a rustic painting of a waterwheel, and then contemplatively stare at a painting of a man being devoured by an animal for hours without a word.
S - Story - If you and them were in a fairytale, which story would you be and who would play which character?
You already know I'm gonna say Beauty and the Beast. Maybe instead of a young prince cursed for being rude, he's a fae king cursed to have his life bound to a lantern and his entire kingdom shrouded in never-ending night and winter. And instead of love transforming him back into a young prince, he just becomes able to survive without the lantern and the kingdom goes back to all four seasons.
T - Teach - What skills of theirs would they teach you? What would you teach them?
I already know how to sing. I performed in church choir until around 12 and in school chorus until college (and only stopped because college chorus kept rejecting me thanks to my solo performance anxiety). That being said the way Beast sings is INCOMPARABLE. I want him to teach me to sing more powerfully and confidently. I want him to give me the confidence to sing loud AF opera in the woods at the dead of night. I don't think I have anything to teach him, but I'd love to read books to him.
Woodsman, holding an axe: Tell me where my daughter is, you arboreal piece of shit!
Beast: Can you feel your heart burning? Can you feel the struggle within? The fear within me is beyond anything your soul can make. You cannot kill me in a way that matters.
Woodsman, holding the axe tighter: I'M NOT FUCKING SCARED OF YOU!
Beatrice: Hey Beast what the FUCK does that mean
Beast: Decay exists as an extant form of life.
Greg: That's terrifying, thank you!
That post inspired me so here’s a very self-indulgent meme featuring some of my f/os
