Hello everyone, it’s come to my attention that I have too many followers so I’m going to tell you my conspiracy theory about culinary competition shows. I don’t think I’ve told anyone this before so I hope you’re excited. It is marked NSFW intentionally. This is NSFW. It’s also not vaguely f1 related
If you unfollow me for this pls send me an ask so I can track its effectivity for the next time I have too much traction on my page. I have to keep the property values down.
every time i watch beat bobby flay i'm always chirping at the tv and yell NOBODY BEATS THE OLD MAN
i am like pro wresling levels of invested and i need to calm down
I thought I read somewhere in your blog that you enjoy cooking competition shows, is that correct? And if so, which is your favorite and why?
Whenever someone asks me to choose a favorite from a group of things that I love I get ADHD decision paralysis 😵💫😵💫😵💫 there are very few things in this world that I can definitively say consistently is my absolute favorite. Cooking shows are not one of them so I'm just going to tell you some of the ones that I love and I might think of more after I'm done typing. I'll throw them in the tags.
The why ... Well..... That's a lot. I'm Italian American, I grew up in a family's restaurant, I love food, I love cooking and baking, I love the creativity, and the way food brings people together. The way freshly baked cookies makes me miss my mom. The way rolling out fresh pasta can get rid of so much tension. The way the smell of Sunday gravy (sauce) cooking takes me back to being a little girl standing on a stool so that I could stir the pot. The way a perfectly cooked egg will forever remind me someone that was once very important to me. The way my heart melts when my son very carefully puts together layer by layer of a lasagna just like I've taught him to do.... Just as my mother taught me to do... knowing that it's the same as all of the generations before me. And somehow in those simple steps we are keeping them alive and with us. Cooking and baking has been such a huge part of my life. It's the way we celebrate, it's the way we show love, it's the way we offer comfort, it's the way we build memories and moments, and it's the one for sure way to get all seven of us kids back home for Thanksgiving.
Those are all the reasons why I love cooking and baking shows but as far as my love for the competition aspect of it, it's fairly simple. One of my guilty pleasures is the drama of reality TV and I'm super competitive but not athletic so I very much enjoy watching the competition in the same way that I enjoy watching a hockey game. Plus, I have a wicked competency kink. So it definitely does funny things to my brain when people are ridiculously skilled at what they're doing. I hope that answers your question☺️
My favorite shows in no particular order are Top Chef, MasterChef, all of the Baking Championship shows, Tournament of Champions, Hell's Kitchen, Bobby's Triple Threat, BBQ Brawl, 24 in 24, Worst Cooks in America, Next Level Chef, Wildcard Kitchen and all of the "rescue" type cooking shows where they go in and try to help save a business. I know that I am forgetting so many that I like but those are the ones that I have set on my DVR so that I don't miss any of the newest episodes🍽️👩🍳
Sophie Flay and the Gorn appear as first round judges in the Food Network's Beat Bobby Flay.
Syd could beat Bobby Flay with ease on his show

We watch a lot of baking/cooking/sewing competitions in my house, and as entertaining as they are, I hate how the format of these kinds of shows -- and the nature of them being competitive -- puts constraints on the quality of the finished products. Like, making clothing is a time-consuming task, especially if you want it to look good and not have a bunch of mistakes and things! And pitting one person against another, where only winning matters, kind of devalues the works that are good, but don't quite make the cut. So, here's my concept for an alternative:
Instead of a cooking competition show, it's a show where we take three mediocre, preferably poor-to-middle-class cooks/chefs, give them all the equipment and supplies they could possibly desire, and challenge them to make the dish of their dreams. It doesn't matter what it is, doesn't even matter if it tastes good, just let them go wild with it. The weirder, more experimental, the better. Force celebrity judges/chefs to taste test the dishes and give a review. The entertainment value comes from a) the participants' genuine love for their craft and b) forcing otherwise high-brow cooks to eat weird shit on public broadcast and then try to report on it without crushing the cook who made it's soul.
Similar concept but for the sewing show, and instead of the final pieces being judged/consumed, the final pieces are put on celebrities/professional models and put into a fashion show runway thing where all the proceeds go to the charities of the contestants' choice. Again, the weirder and more experimental the better.
