June 26th is...
Barcode Day - Barcodes contain a wealth of information, including pricing, product, dates, manufacturer, and shipping. They are ideal for tracking inventory and sales, but they do so much more than that. Almost every industry uses barcodes, and they likely make your life easier without you even knowing it.
Beauticians Day - Cosmetology is the study and application of a beauty treatment. The branches of cosmetology include hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures, pedicures, and electrology. This means they buff, polish, trim, pluck, perk, brighten, lighten, plump, and mostly make our finest features shine. They continually train in all the ways to keep us looking our best while keeping up with the latest styles, the most reliable products, treatments, and techniques.
Canoeing Day - Canoeing is a fantastic hobby, and along with being environmentally friendly and relaxing, its also a great form of outdoor exercise that’s suitable for all ages. It’s no surprise that canoeing gets its own day of celebration, with so many fans around the world. Canoeing is an easy activity to learn, and with some basic safety gear anyone can hit the water and enjoy this healthy hobby.
Chocolate Pudding Day - Chocolate pudding is usually made with milk and sugar, flavored with chocolate and vanilla then thickened with flour or cornstarch. However, some recipes do use eggs when making the pudding. Historically, chocolate pudding is a variation of chocolate custard, using starch as a thickener instead of eggs.
Coconut Day - We use the whole coconut in many different forms for our bodies and everyday cooking. From shredded coconut to milk, cream, water, and oil, each provides essential nutrients and flavor. Its anti-viral and anti-microbial properties are notable as well. Coconut is rich in fiber, Vitamin B6, iron, and minerals like magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and zinc. The oil from coconut moisturizes our skin and also helps keep our skin clear and hair silky, too
World Refrigeration Day - The term ‘refrigeration’ here is being used in its widest sense as the process of achieving and maintaining a required temperature below that of its surroundings. An example of refrigeration is the preservation and distribution of perishable food products. Refrigeration systems are also used extensively for providing thermal comfort to human beings by means of air-conditioning.
Any guesses on what this contraption is? No, it’s not a torture device...it’s a permanent wave machine! Before "chemical perms" of the 1960s, this was the most popular way of getting an overall permanent wave. This particular machine was used from the 1930s until the 1950s by a Beech Grove, Indiana beautician.

Price Point
The new beautician at my mother’s retirement center has raised prices for a simple haircut. A clip that previously cost $17 now costs $20 for a woman and $15.00 for a man. Discrimination of that kind raises my hackles, but, of course, we women aren’t new to it. Some might argue we bring discrimination upon ourselves for we think nothing of a dropping a wad of cash at the beauty parlor just to look as if we’ve stumbled out of bed. Or, have naturally purple tresses. Recently, I grumbled to one cosmetic counter clerk that the cost for hair products designed to make it seem as if I’d never put a comb to my head was too high. Unsympathetic, she shrugged and said if price was an issue, I should try another counter. Naturally, I arched my eyebrows, staring back at her as if she’d insisted 2 plus 2 equals 5. Of course, price is an issue. Spending less on my hair means I can be more charitable to others. What’s more, I don’t suppose paying less on my hair means I’m less of a person. I may be in the minority in that opinion. As Maggie Bullock writes in her article for Town&Country (9/2019, pgs. 91-92), stylish women will spend $350 a week just to have their hair fluffed. Others raise not a hair when they fork out $225 for a jar of Russian Amber Imperial Gold Mask to ward off frizz. One Saudi princess pays her beautician $10,000 for a palace call. (Ibid, pg. 91.) Unmoved by these examples, I take a dim view of so much conspicuous consumption. If the princess wants a tousled look, let her spend the night in a homeless shelter and leave $10,000 behind. She’ll get her tousled look, and the glow from her good deed will leave her looking better than an hour spent under a dryer.
