I saw yMusic, the classical sextet that I always seem to be talking about, perform for free at the David Rubenstein Atrium at the Lincoln Center yesterday evening. They are always a lot of fun to watch-- they are high energy and play with an almost inhuman precision, which can aptly be described by the title of their 2011 album, Beautiful Mechanical.
yMusic played some pieces from Beautiful Mechanical, as well as the entirety of their brief new EP, Year of the Dragon. Hardcore Sufjan Stevens fans will recognize the title-- they cover his originally electronic song, which was neat to hear. They also played some other pieces by contemporary composers such as Timo Andres. I especially liked the composition that they performed by Nico Muhly, entitled "Balance Problems."
You have probably inadvertently heard yMusic before, as they have collaborated with a lot of the biggest indie acts (St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear, The Dirty Projectors...). Their crossover ability, as well as their exuberant performances, make them accessible to even people who might not be very familiar with classical music, which I think is very important in an age where classical music is often associated with old people going to the symphony in fur coats. Anyways, definitely check them out!

yMusic's Beautiful Mechanical is out today! yMusic has been on the scene collaborating with the likes of Bon Iver, Antony and the Johnsons, Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond and, my personal favorite, Son Lux.* It's great that they've finally released an album by their ownsomes. They've got the knack for having classically trained virtuosity alongside the charisma and excitement of an indie rock band.

*Of course Son Lux is my favorite, he is a composer here! Also! yMusic has been one of our favorite collection of people for a while. They hang out with us at the studio sometimes.
The ever-amazing yMusic recently teamed up with St. Vincent's Annie Clark, who composed the enchanting "Proven Badlands," set to appear on yMusic's forthcoming record Beautiful Mechanical, out next week.
