On Saturday night I was honored to be the host of the @jackandjillinc #Beautillion. In one of our final conversations I asked my mother to attend the event with me. She'd picked out what she was going to wear but by the time we were supposed to go she said, " I'll just sit this one out." "Mom", I said . . . "Come on you look good. Let's get out. I mean I can just call and tell them I can't do it if you're not feeling well. Tarik is a news anchor and I know he'll be there. He can handle it I'm sure ". "I feel fine. YOU need to GO", she said with as much authority as she could muster. "People are there to see you. YOUR gift speaks for you. I'll be right here when you get back." When I returned home, she was there waiting anxiously. "How did it go", was her first question when I walked through the door. I pulled out the program, let her look through it and was even delighted to see that my friend Cassandra Barlow had recorded some of a tribute I did to the Beaux, which I shard with mom. I think I was so emotional on Saturday night that I was moved to use the #PearlCleage poem We Speak Your Name as inspiration for a special unscripted tribute. Mom smiled proudly. "As usual, nice job". I chatted with her a few moments more before going to my own bed. I was secure in the fact that she was proud of the work that she had done. I slept soundly not knowing that the conversation would be one of our last. "The beau bond was an groundbreaking experience for me just because in modern society, especially amongst teens, being open with your brothers is considered soft or as the youth say fruity. I believe that my perspective has changed because when I trusted and therein bonded with other young men, I realized that its ok to be open. Going through the campfire experience, what us Beaus shared about our fathers helped us learn that other people are probably going through the same things as you and are willing to help. I think if I only got one thing out of the bonding trip was that together we are stronger and the old bible verse rang true,"as iron sharpens iron so does man sharpens man."
