Let’s be Honest
People treat colored pencils with disdain. A lesser medium compared to oil paintings, acrylics, and watercolor. I never saw any first-rate artists saying wonders about colored pencils. It is a degrading form of art used only for sketches and brainstorm. Only a riffraff use such a thing. Some people will think. Thankfully I am the very few that thinks colored pencils are awesome. El Hogar Filipino Building
ink on paper 23cm x 30cm post processed in Ps CC 2015
This was an older artwork of mine that was drawn to commemorate Heritage Month. And as a way to spread awareness about the importance of our built heritage, I decided to create a tribute art. For so many years, even before I started taking up Architecture. I find myself very fascinated with the beauty of Old Manila and El Hogar Filipino Building is one of those edifices that needs to be noticed. El Hogar Filipino Building has been standing at the far end of the Escolta and Binondo districts for 104 years. Witnessing the highs and lows of our beloved City of Manila. It has survived wars, typhoons. Battles that are bigger than what we have fought in our lifetimes. Its beauty was tested by time and yet after so many decades with no proper care and maintenance, one can still glimpse the beauty of its detailed cornices, ornate keystone atop of its arches and its beautiful supercolumniation that seamlessly frame its crystal-like fenestration. El Hogar’s beauty doesn’t end on its physical beauty, it also tells a wonderful story about it and our city. For me, it was like Taj Mahal - a product of the undying love of a man for his wife. It is a gift of Don Antonio Melián Pavía to his mestiza wife Doña Margarita Zóbel y de Ayala. But unlike Taj that was built to house a deceased, El Hogar was made for the living. It’s as if it was built with an image of a welcoming home in mind. In fact, El Hogar Filipino, when translated to our language means “Tahanang Filipino.”It’s like a palace of sorts with common Filipinos’ sensibilities put into it. Full of grandiosity that mirrors our dreams but still with a sense of familiarity and hospitality. Warm to the touch, delicate to the eyes. Yet, amidst its cultural, historical and architectural importance to Manila’s identity, it is being threatened by to be wiped off from the face of our City for the sake of “modernity.” The same modernity that is so hastily, mercilessly and insensitively done, that robbed us a large chunk of our identity.
For the past four decades, no one has touched El Hogar’s doors, opened its windows, and warmed its space. For far too long already, Hogar is an empty home.
