In 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition intended to travel up Beaverhead River because of a rock formation recognized by Sacajawea, pictured here in 1871. Upon their arrival however, the explorers found that the sign directing their path had been cut down by a beaver. They were instead forced to head up the Big Hole, which had swifter currents, ultimately swamping two of their canoes.
Today, Beaverhead Rock is located in southwest Montana and is an angler's paradise for trout fishing. The location is also on the US National Register of Historic Places, which is administered by the National Park Service. We are celebrating their 100th Anniversary all month with historic records!
