One of the most iconic of all cordage parts is the "becket" (or handle) of a sea chest. These were not usually made by the sailor himself, but were bought already assembled on the chest. Those who had the skill to make them would obtain the chest with grommets and then replace them at will. It could take several months for a sailor to make a pair of grommets to his liking, for many reasons: The materials were almost always "found" and not new. Old rope was taken apart, retarred and converted into the sizes needed. In the case of hemp rope, this is quite easy, as with a little skill and experience, the hemp can be very easily converted into smaller lines. Old sails also contributed to the production of marlin and whip lines with their warp and weft threads. Nothing is wasted on board a ship. The sailors would put an Amish farmer to shame with their frugality.
