22 February is Cat Day

2/22, or 22/2 in Europe (luckily it works both ways, unlike Pi Day), can be pronounced "nya-nya-nya" in Japanese, which sounds like a cat meowing. So here's a picture from Gôtoku-ji, the famous maneki-neko temple.

What do you mean, "one cat is not enough for cat day"?

Okay, how's this?

Gôtoku-ji is absolutely packed with maneki-neko figures! The "beckoning cat" is its lucky charm that people buy, make wishes on, and leave at the temple. The legend behind the lucky cat, at this temple at least, goes back to a feudal lord in the Edo period, who was drawn into the temple by a cat just before a storm struck; the cat had thus invited him in to take shelter.

What do you mean, "more"?

The local tram line also has a maneki-neko liveried train. I already mentioned it once, but didn't tell the story behind it: it's basically an anniversary livery. It first appeared in 2017 for the 110th anniversary of the Tamaden company that originally ran the line, and returned, permanently, in 2019 for the 50th anniversary of the Setagaya line in its current form.
