Commissioned by Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA), Becoming Graphic was an experimental and innovative piece that sought to meld two-dimensional drawings and live theatre. This rich, multi-layered work starts with a comic featuring a superhero called Green Bolt, drawn by acclaimed cartoonist Sonny Liew. It also includes the process of going from page to stage as part of a radio play, as well as the growing-up years of Liew himself, presented through recorded interviews with Liew and his family members. The performance wasn't always easy to watch, as it delves into themes of ageing and mortality. But this is what good theatre is about - it challenges you, makes you think deeper about issues, and broadens your perspectives.
