Bedugul is noticeably cooler than any part of Bali as it’s a higher elevation above sea level, and it is cool enough strawberries grow here. The whole Bedugul area is actually a favorite upland weekend and holiday retreat for locals and island visitors alike from the southern and urban areas, as it is strategically located, connecting the island’s north and south.
The Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is both a famous picturesque landmark and a significant temple complex located on the western side of the Beratan Lake in Bedugul, central Bali. Ulun Danu Beratan, literally ‘the source temple of Lake Beratan’, is easily the island’s most iconic sanctuary sharing the scenic qualities with the seaside temples of Uluwatu and Tanah Lot. The reflective surface of the lake surrounding most of the temple’s base creates a unique floating impression, while the mountain range of the Bedugul region encircling the lake provides the temple with a scenic backdrop.
Pura Bratan looks and feels unlike many of the other temples we’d been to in Bali so far in its general layout. If you’re getting temple fatigue in Bali, this is a pretty good one to throw into the mix as it does stand out.
Tanah Lot is famed for its unique offshore setting and sunset backdrops. It is an ancient Hindu shrine perched on top of an outcrop in the middle of constantly crashing waves. Tanah Lot Temple is simply among Bali’s not-to-be-missed icons. The onshore site is dotted with smaller shrines alongside visitors’ leisure facilities that comprise restaurants, shops and a cultural park presenting regular dance performances.
At high tide, waves flood the causeways making it impossible to cross. At low tide, you may cross to view the rock base where the legendary ‘guardian’ sea snakes dwell in crevices around the Tirta Pabersihan fountain. This natural spout is the source of holy water for all the temples in the area. Priests at the fountain bless visitors by sprinkling holy water over their heads.
