Bee Caves - “Running Home To You”
SXSW 2017 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2
Pairs Well With…My Morning Jacket, Blitzen Trapper, Phosphorescent
Austin folk-based rock band Bee Caves have been sharing some studio shots since 2016, so hopefully SXSW 2017 will be a showcase for new music to follow up their debut EP Animals With Religion. Americana intermingles with spacey rock tones on that record, a subtly dramatic effort with a focus on rootsy, effective songwriting.
2015 Review: Bee Caves’ debut Animals With Religion has a surprising amount of depth, combining a folk rock base with choice electronic moments. This dynamic is impressive and enhances Bee Caves’ emotional, grabbing songwriting. “Running Home To You” and “Black Mason Hills” are primarily Americana tracks and are the place that Bee Caves easily sounds the strongest. The title track, a darkened pop song with ghostly electronic percussion, takes a vocal that could easily go over an acoustic dirge and reframes the perspective through an adventurous production and performance. The range of Animals With Religion is a bit of a double-edged sword as it’s hard to pinpoint Bee Caves’ identity, but the special moments make them a local band that could quickly break to a national audience, all depending on Bee Caves’ next moves.
