Nucs just got their Christmas candy feed today. New recipe (darker sugar cake) incorporates fall knotweed honey, propolis, braggs apple cider vinegar and just a hint of lemongrass and spearmint. Very active gals but not one sting. Have found that hives with a little more "jump" tend to be stronger producers but always watching temperament to see that they are not prone to go kamikaze (or um... "kamikazbee" .... :/ ). Assessing a hive's temperament is a constant questioning process and to be fair it takes time to know whether they are having temporary environmental issues or are just straight up bitchy "agro". #beekeeping #urbanapiary #beebloom2014 #beebloom2014cjn
@jessheberle bumblebee working it's way around the best nectar zone on the #Helenium autumnal ( #sneezeweed ). Looks like he/she is going for nectar sipping here although there is pollen packed on his/her legs. We'll talk with the folks at Carnegie Natural History to try to ID this specific bumble species so it can be accurately referenced if you choose to paint it for your Flora piece. We'll be painting one #honeybee (Apis mellifera ligustica) and at least one native bee you observe actively foraging.
