Endemic Birds of Cuba
Bee Hummingbird carving
The Bee Hummingbird has the distinction of being the smallest bird in the world. Reaching an average size of 2-2.4 inches, this bird is no light eater, consuming up to half its body mass in food each day and 8 times its body mass in water. Yet, this species still weighs less than a dime.
The specimen was collected by Gustav Link Sr., who spent many months in Cuba in 1913 on the Isla de la Juventud. This area south of the main island of Cuba was called the Isle of Pines until 1978.
This carving designed after the specimen, as were other carvings in this series, were created to survive the humid environment that Phipps Conservatory has, where real taxidermy mounts would not be able to be put on exhibit.
Tropical Forest Cuba is an exhibit opening February 10 at Phipps Conservatory. The exhibit showcases the vibrant ecology and culture of one of the most bio-diverse nations on Earth. Cuba houses more endemic animal and plant species than any other Caribbean island, boasting some of the most fascinating and unique bird species.
