Why beekeepers feed bees during the winter?

Honeybees store honey in their hive to provide food for the winter and for when nectar and pollen are in short supply. As beekeepers harvest the bees, honey, beekeepers need to replace the honey with sugar syrup or pollen patties to prevent the bees from starving over winter.
