S02E02 – Barrel Aged Imperial Porter by Schooner Exact Schooner Exact is a relative newcomer to Japan and their Barrel Aged Imperial Porter is anything but common.
Story time with Shulkie
My mom was a major hippie who grew her hair down to her ass and refused to wear makeup or pluck her eyebrows and thought the whole entire concept of marriage was to erase a woman's identity. Hero, right? But she wasn't always that way. She was the only child of a very conservative Catholic family, living in a very conservative Catholic neighborhood, going to a very conservative Catholic school (the kind where nuns slap you with rulers). Once, my grandmother told her that if she had to pick a career to "be a teacher or a nurse so you can follow your husband anywhere." Yeesh.
After dating her high school sweetheart, Joe, for 6 years (sound familiar?) they got engaged because they wanted to get couples housing when Joe enlisted because his birthday was within the draft range and it was common knowledge that if you enlisted rather than were drafted you weren't made a grunt. Joe had a BIG Catholic family. He was the only son of 5 children and they lived in a tiny post-war house that only had one bathroom that was ALWAYS occupied because his sister had terrible OCD and spent hours and hours in the shower. They also had an aunt living with them. She had been a nun but then decided the nunship wasn't for her so then she wasn't a nun. All the ladies (his mom, his many aunts, and his sisters) decided to throw my Mom a wedding shower and within a month, they had over 300 people invited to this shower!
Mind you, this is the shower. Not the actual wedding. So it was ONLY the female portion of the expected guest list. 300 fucking people!
The aunt who was no longer a nun took it upon herself to make the gifts for the shower guests. She took beer bottles (Heineken), and PAINTED THEM WHITE. And then she put PAINTED FOAM BALLS on top of the beer bottles with little felt ears etc. So she made little Cats, out of Beer bottles. She made Beer Cats. For wedding shower gifts. Beer cats. Take that in. Picture those kitschy 1970's cats. Close your eyes. Imagine 300 of them. Aren't they FANTASTIC?
And the ex-nun slaved over making all of these ugly, ugly beer cats and couldn't possibly understand why my mom was horrified and thought she should be more grateful.
Feeling like her control over the wedding stuffs was being taken away, coupled with a desire to continue her education, plus other factors, led my Mom to call off the wedding. And then you know, several years later marry my dad. But I've seen old pictures of Joe and idk if that was the best call.
BEER CATS.
Sorry, I had to repeat it.
