I was impressed by a modern Swedish tasting menu my first night in Gothenburg and earlier in the day I had a fantastic seafood lunch. For my second night, I decided to try another Swedish restaurant offering one of Sweden’s most famous dishes. I left my Avenyn hotel and walked to Smaka for a classic Swedish meal.

I took a seat at the bar and ordered away. I had a glass of red wine and wanted to try the “Smakas” meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberries. We know the iconic dish as Swedish meatballs, but while you’re in the country, they’re simply just meatballs. They were great and covered with a creamy rich gravy. It’s a comforting dish complete with mashed potatoes and tart and slightly sweet lingonberries.

Swedish Dinner
After dinner, I stopped by Beerista to try a couple local beers. The rustic gastropub features draft beer from Swedish microbreweries as well as international brands.

Another day in Gothenburg passed by. The next morning I went to one of the most popular breakfast spots in town.
Cafe Husaren, located in a the old neighborhood of Haga, is a small cafe that offers coffee, tea, juices, sandwiches, and a variety of pastries and baked goods.

Baked Goods
The most popular item is their enormous Cinnamon Bun. One, please! It’s topped with large flakes of sugar. I could only eat a quarter of it. It was big, fairly dense, and pretty good. It’s not nearly as sweet as the cinnamon buns generously covered in frosting that I grew up knowing.

After breakfast, I walked back to the hotel to change into my jersey. It was game day!
