I think that if you know that you need to get help, whether it's to stop thoughts or to make sure they don't come back, then it might be beneficial to tell your friend so you have a support system. Of course it's entirely up to you and don't feel pressured, but that's how I see it (of course I don't know the complete context or the situation or the strength of your friendship, so take what I say with a grain of salt).
