Beijing Fried Rice: Origins

Ever wondered what the heck Beijing fried rice really was? Well, Han Geng revealed its origins on A Date with Lu Yu back in 2007, in case you missed it.

Host: (Asking Geng) "What's your specialty in cooking?"

Audience: "Beijing chao fan (Beijing fried rice)!"

Host: "Beijing kao ya (Beijing duck)??"

Audience: "Chao fan (fried rice)!!"

Host: "Beijing fried rice.......ah, you mean egg fried rice!"

Geng: "This is a joke stemming from a pronunciation problem of mine. Once, because I finished training in the middle of the night, I was too hungry and there wasn't anything to eat. So, I was looking in the fridge to see if there was anything I could cook."

Geng: "There were only eggs and onions so I just...."

*Everyone laughs*

Host: "Only eggs and onions."

Geng: "I saw rice in the ricepot, so I just thought of making fried rice.

Geng: "Egg fried rice. In Korean, it's supposed to be 'Bok Eum Bap.' But my pronunciation wasn't accurate, so they heard it as 'Bi Kiang Bap.'"

Geng: "Which was Beijing rice. Lots of the members ate it, said it tasted good and asked what it was. I said, 'Bok Eum Bap.'"

Geng: "They said, 'Ah? Bi Kiang Bap? Meaning 'Ah, Beijing rice.'"

Geng: "So from then on, it stuck. All the way until now.....Beijing rice."

*Everyone laughs*

Host: "After a few hundred years, Koreans are all going to want to eat Beijing fried rice. It started from Han Geng's mistake here. But it's actually only egg fried rice."
